Subject: Anyone ever had their Ipod/Iphone stolen?

I don't normally post in COJ but I have a question..recently I had my car broken into whilst I was inside the gym on October 2nd.  I left my wallet, ipod etc etc stuffed under the seat of my wee honda civic.  I did not bring it into the gym because the lockers there, even with locks on have been getting broken into. They picked the lock on the passenger side door and just grabbed what they could see.  Nothing was taken from the back which is just as well as my friends wetsuit was there.  Anyway yesterday I got an alert via apple that my Ipod had been found but the people that had it had turned off location services but when I put it into lost mode an address and a map popped up.  An apartment building about 9 miles from my house.  When I called the cops they said they couldn't do anything because it would mean knocking on every door in the building, but to keep an eye on the location incase it changed.  A few hours later I started to receive pictures via Icloud on my Ipad that were not mine.  Two kids, smiling into the camera, taking picture after picture of themselves. Nice and clear.  Now the police have the pictures and I'm hoping the apartment manager recognizes them.  I'm wondering if ANYTHING like this has happened to someone with an apple product?  Did you get it back via the Iphone app? I have to say I'm extremely impressed by it's accuracy and I seriously am glad for Icloud and that I had installed IO7 before it was stolen.    They used one of my debit cards for $90 worth of gas, so I'm thinking they have a giant arsed truck or something..or 2 cars.  They also have my bloody green card.  I do not know WHY I had it in my wallet, I'm really not meant to, but that's $600 to replace.  I got a lot of grief for leaving all that stuff in my car but it didn't give anyone the right to take it.

Anyway, I'll find out today hopefully if the kids can be recognized. Wish me luck...

With Find My iPhone, you should be able to lock it remotely where they wouldn't be able to do anything with it.....put I'm pretty sure that you can still track it.

Glad you have iCloud turned on to get the pics.

Also...if you wanted to have fun with them, text your phone and let them that you know where they're at (and text a pic of them back to themselves).....or lock it remotely and then press "play sound" and it lets out a high pitched beep that can only be turned off with a pass code.

Just wanted to say that I'm sorry about the break-in to the vehicle and the theft, and I hope you catch the little effers.

Good luck.

I did that a LOT yesterday but eventually figured they might wipe the IPOD and I'd SOL...  My friend seems to think it was hacked into because it did have a passcode that only I knew...

Leave it on.....and don't do anything to make anyone think you are looking at it.  If your Police Department likes to work they should get your device back pretty easily....or at least develope suspect information.

Start copying those photos now. If they suddenly figure out how to turn off photo stream they'll disappear for good unless you've duplicated them in another album!

I had mine stolen from the college where I used to swim. HS wrestling meet and some kid broke into my locker and took it. Stupid kid made a bunch of calls to what were obviously his family. I called and told him I wanted my phone back. Mom got on the phone and started screaming at me and cursing me out. Very classy. Never got the phone back.

Yep, +1000

The last thing you want is for them to know you're watching/tracking them.  Just funnel every bit of information you can to the police.
If you don't get anywhere with the police, you can go to the media.  They love these kinds of stories during sweeps week.

My son left his iPhone on the top of his car one night and woke me up at 12:30 to see if I could do that "tracky thing" on the computer.  lol

I pulled it up and it had it dead center on a house in a neighborhood nearby.  We drove over there and the lights were still on.  We knocked on the door and the guy answered the door laughing.  He said they found it on the street and were going to take it to the store in the morning to turn it in.  We didn't care if he was lying or not and even gave him $20 to say thanks for picking it up in the street.  It probably would have been driven over had he not.

My friends car was stolen and the thief did not know that his iphone was in the car. He was able to track the car via iphone with the police on another line telling them exactly where the car was. The police said he was lucky it was in there and they would not have been able to "chase the suspect due to the high speed of the car in a residential area." Fortunately for my friend, the thief was not real familiar with the area and ended up on a road that dead -ends at a canal. Best case scenario for my friend. Best of luck.

I'm sure LB can attest to this, but there's a lot of really dumb criminals out there.

Brother.....trust me completely on this....if criminals weren't so stupid 99% of us wouldn't have jobs as cops. We're not exactly brain surgeons.

My wife and I just went through the fun of trying to track her iPhone down. She left it on the roof of her car. We tracked it step by step for over 5 hours until it finally went offline. The last location it showed was in a neighborhood, my wife went over there after work and it had pinpointed the exact house. Unfortunately the guy had ran over the phone before he saw it and picked it up. It was in 4 different pieces but was still tracking his every move.

I agree, don't make it obvious you are looking for the phone. Whoever has it can plug it into iTunes, restore it and it will be gone forever. You can wipe the device and lock it down but I wouldn't do that until you are ready to abandon all hope of getting it back.

Gotta go with this as well. Taking the law into your own hands may backfire in a big way.

So what is the best way or app to track your stolen devices?

About a year ago my work group had a company iPad stolen out of my (locked) office. There were 3rd party work crews in over the weekend, which seems like it would be really easy to track them down to investigate, but the company basically just took the loss and didn't want to accuse anyone of anything.

When I asked the "owner" if a tracking app had been installed he said "yes" but when they pulled it up it was either not working or had been disabled by the thief. I read about thieves immediately disabling those apps but that was awhile ago. Have the evolved? Recommendations?

Just the standard find my iPhone app. But it has been greatly enhanced in ios7, works much better now, and according to my phone once you turn it on you have to have the appleID password to turn it off, not just the 4 digit passcode. So if you roll without a code like I do it still can't be turned off.

You can lock the phone with that app and they won't be able to reactivate it without the password, but all they have to do then is turn the phone off and you won't be able to track it. I read that a full system restore by plugging the phone into iTunes would give them full access to the phone with all your data erased of course. But that was before ios7 so I don't know if they can even do that anymore.

I imagine anyone with brains could get around it, but like the OP's case it is just some dumb kids who don't have a lot of brains.

Yep, ditto.  Just log into icloud.com with your itunes ID that the phone is logged in with and click on "find my iPhone".  It's as easy as that.  You can disable the feature on your phone, and as Aaron mentioned that's the first thing the smart criminals do.

Android recently added "Android Device Manager" so this feature is built in on all android phones now as well.  Just log into Android Device Manager with your google id and click on locate device.

Total side note, this feature is awesome for parents.    We told our kids about the feature and showed it to them.  Then told them if we ever try to locate them and the feature is turned off the phone goes bye bye.

iOS7 makes it so you can't just turn it off anymore, have to have the appleID password to get it turned off.

lol, up until Android Device Manager this was the one feature I absolutely LOVED about iPhones.  two of my kids have iPhones and one had an Android.  I could never keep track of the one with the android, but the iPhones rocked.
Now they're on equal ground.  lol

I absolutely called the cops. That was the first thing I did. I knew calling the number would be dumb. I did however get a reverse phone number hit. A name.  Gave it to the cop, he went over and nothing with that last name.  But I know for sure the kids live in those apartments. From the pictures they took as well as the video the apartments have on youtube I was able to match up the livingroom and the kitchen...

IPod responded again to being logged on. A grocery store across from the apartments. Case has been assigned to a detective but I feel they aren't taking all my evidence as seriously as I am. I am honestly so tempted to go stalk the neighbourhood but I won't. I'm just frustrated is all..  I know they have better things to do I'm sure....
