Expert 938![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: Max number of swimmers in a 25 meter laneSo, I don't have ready access to OW (legally) here in NJ, and I swim at the local YMCA. Because of the school year/swim season start my once 6-8 lanes of evening swimming are shut down this week to 0 (yes zero from 4:30-6:30)-2. Last week there were 3 lanes, and I was swimming with 4 to the lane, which royally sucked. If I walk in tonight and there are already 4 in the lane, I am seriously considering skipping the opportunity to be the 5th in the lane and go home. Is this just silly of me? What would you consider to be too crowded in a 25 meter lane? Oh, and 5 lanes open up at 9:15. Yay.

Elite 2553![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tucson, AZ | Subject: RE: Max number of swimmers in a 25 meter laneIt works best if everyone is of similar speed. At Master's we regularly swim 3 in a lane, and 4 isn't unusual. 5 starts to get crowded. But, yeah, I can see where it would be a problem if the speeds among folks were all different. |

At the Y, I'm pretty bummed if there's more than 2, cuz I know I'm going to have to work around most of the people there. |

But now, it could be pretty frustrating if you were doing a fast set and the other person/people were doing longer slow sets. |

I'm doing a 300/1000/200 setup tonight, and I had a similar swim last week. I typically swim in the fast lane and keep ahead to keeping up with anyone else. Last week this dude showed up that just crushed all of us. He was frustrated enough to push off the wall and swim UNDER us (even on shallow end...that was impressive) to get in front of us. I just kept on thinking "yeah, he's fast, but he hasn't swam a k yet." |

No problem at all with 6+ in a lane for an organized practice/training where everyone is matched up with similar abilities, circle swim, and doing identical sets. At the LA Fitness where I swim, I hate having more than 2 people in a lane (counting myself) because the different abilities and sets pretty much force you to split the lane instead of circle swim.

Elite 2706![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hurst, Texas | Subject: RE: Max number of swimmers in a 25 meter laneI HATE to share lanes, and typically 2 in a lane is my max. Not because I'm better or faster...in fact, it is just the opposite. I am slow and don't like feeling rushed, or like I am getting in someone's way. |

Master 1662![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Flagstaff and Phoenix, AZ | Subject: RE: Max number of swimmers in a 25 meter lane2 max, if the lanes are wide. I hate to "circle" because it breaks my "zoning out" when I have to maneuver around others. If the pool gets too crowded I change my training schedule. Late nights are usually best: the kiddies are all in bed and the parents in front of the tube. And the jacuzzi and locker rooms are empty too. But I'm a night owl. If you do early morning runs or something crazy like it then the late night swims might not work for you. |

Member 381![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Max number of swimmers in a 25 meter lanei suppose it depends on the alternative. if there is no other time to get a swim in then maybe being the fifth one in the lane is (barely) ok. besides, by the time you are done with your warm-up one of the other four are bound to think that five is way too many and wrap things up a bit early. it definitely sucks to fight traffic in a 25m lane. |

They're not slow swimmers, aquajoggers, or even people doing some sort of aquatic workout. They literally...just...float. Expert 834![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Medina, MN | Subject: RE: Max number of swimmers in a 25 meter lane5 people would be workable if they're training together and are the same speed. Given that's not likely your situation, it would probably suck. However, if you go 5 in a lane, you can just ratchet back your expectations for a while and assume someone else will get annoyed with it and leave relatively soon. Try doing breastroke, sidestroke or something like that to throw everyone off. |

In non squad environments I've been in situations with 6-8, but it's difficult as inevitably someone is too slow/too fast for the lane, or someone decides to do non-free and muck things up. scott |

Veteran 184![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() San Diego, CA | Subject: RE: Max number of swimmers in a 25 meter laneAs others have said, I have been in masters lanes with 6-8 swimmers. That having been said, they were all on the same workout, and of close to the same speed and ability. In open swim lap lanes 2 or 3 is about the limit. With no organization and common workout in place, and very different levels of swimming in the same lane, its all but impossible to maintain a reasonable circle pattern. Good luck finding an alternative solution. Be sure to talk with the pools aquatic director about your issue. Some pools post signs designating circle pattern, and breaking the lanes into advanced, average and beginner lanes. Again, Good Luck. |

Extreme Veteran 442![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Max number of swimmers in a 25 meter laneHere in Calgary, Alberta, all of the Y's that I've been to are 25m. They do divide the lanes into slow, medium, and fast; and there are usually 2 slow lanes. However, there are different kinds of slow, medium, and fast, as we all know! Yesterday I was in the slow lane with 3 other people and I felt like I was in a race. It was crazy. Everyone is back from summer vacation. So for me 4 is too many in a lane. |
