Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am not yet a totally a barefoot runner yet but am definitely headed in that direction. I was inspired a few years ago by BarefootRick who is/was a regular on the Marathon Forums. (On RW and then on RT) My long term goal is to run a barefoot marathon. I am still working up the distance and have been keeping on softer ground with my barefoot runs. (Beach and Grass Mostly) There are links to a ton of other BF running sites as well as some good info in "Why BF Running?". Any other Barefoot runners out there (Or Aspiring BF Runners?) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I go barefoot on occassion. Well, not completely barefoot, as I wear the FiveFingers, but that is close enough. I have never raced barefoot, as the longest distance I have done is 2.5 miles. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi, I just put a pair of Vibram Five Finger Sprints on hold. I have had a lot of knee and IT Band issues and just took a Chi Running course to try to solve them. I think I am on the right track. What I have been trying to figure out is why can I run for miles on the beach and not be in pain and only run a mile in shoes and it starts bugging me. How do you like your Five Fingers? |

Your running properly when you are barefoot. That is why you feel no pain. Just take it easy if you run on a hard surface with your Five Fingers. You have to allow your bone density to increase and your muscles to strengthen. You will feel it in your calves for several runs. Don't go running four or five miles your first run. You have to take it easy. You can easily break a leg or fracture your foot if you do too much to soon. I have two pairs of the Five Fingers and I am not a big fan of them. I don't like the feeling of my toes be restricted to a certain position. I like to wear water shoes that I get from Wal-Mart. Tons cheaper and just as good. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am back with an update. It has been a couple of weeks since I bought the Five Fingers. I love them! I feel like a kid running in them again. Going up hill is SO much easier than in shoes. Now, I am not going very far (yet). I have been running 4 miles on trails several times a week. Since I couldn't do more than 2 miles without a lot of pain in shoes, I feel like I am going somewhere. I ran through mud last week and just hosed them off when I got home. I have also kayaked in them. I am getting lots of blisters as my feet adjust to the changes. They are not so hot the concrete or maybe I am not so hot on the concrete yet. I am working on Chi Running at the same time. I hope that all my efforts together will equal success- at last. So far, no orthotics, no knee band, no Ipod, no physical therapy...I think I am heading somewhere good! Now, for racing (Sprint distances) I don't think I can run in these "shoes". Any ideas? Maybe Nike Frees? Wal- Mart- water shoes? |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi, I was wondering if you were "barefoot" completely or did you where any protection on your feet at all? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glad to hear your having good success with your FF It still boggles my mind that my friend who is a longtime BF runner used to duct tape his feet during his transition period. (FF were not yet available) |

I think some of the BF folks here are almost exclusively unshod runners. I am still transitioning. I go BF on soft surfaces like the beach, grass and the composite running track. I need to get more unshod hard surface runs going mostly to work up the callus's on my feet and to tune in my sense of focus on the road ahead. (To avoid obstacles like rocks and glass) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As I waited to start the Dallas White Rock Half Marathon last December, I cheered on the Full Marathon runners at their start. One dude ran by me and he was running barefoot. It was 46 degrees and raining. I like my Brooks. Chris |

I've been wanting to give BF a try and your post gave me an idea. My local high school does have a composite track - might be worth trying it for a few laps to build up my feet. |

By mid morning or early afternoon if the sun has been beating down on it you don't want to be on it barefoot until you have built up the skin on the sole of your foot. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am continuing to run almost exclusively in my Five Fingers. Today I did several miles on a muddy road that I would have never run on in shoes. At the end I felt like a kid and just hosed them off. I can't believe how much better I run "almost" barefoot. I was seriously thinking of quiting running before I took both the Chi Running course and started my barefoot effort. When I first bought my Five Fingers I tried them out on the treadmill. I sounded like an elephant pounding away. I never noticed that in "real" shoes. Last week I tried them out on the treadmill and I was SO much quieter. The leg I have trouble with still makes some noise. Thought it was an interesting discovery. I am still getting a lot of blisters on my toes and heels. I ran completely barefoot on grass to let some of my blisters heel a little. The fun is back in running. I hope this helps anyone who thinks about giving it a try. I still don't run more than a mile on concrete, though. Amazing difference since 3 months ago I was in physical therapy for the 3rd time, had custom orthodics that were changed multiple times and wore a brace. I wear none of that now and don't even run with an Ipod anymore. I just enjoy running too much to block it out with music. Can't believe it myself. I hope the next months will finally allow me to build up longer distance. I will keep you all posted. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Last summer, during one of my triathlons I pulled my bungee laces out of my shoes in T2 and ran a mile (of the 5K) without laces before I was fed up trying to keep the shoes on my feet. But once I arrived at the aid station I decided to ditch the shoes and run barefoot the remaining few miles. My feet were slightly sore after the race but overall felt very good. I haven't tried it since but I know in the back of my mind that I can do it again if need be ![]() |

If the run is on a hard surface then I will wear water shoes. I had an ITB injury a month ago and have run very little since, but have run barefoot more often than not. I haven't had any ITB issues when running BF, but the bottoms of my feet aren't very tough and blister easily. I have water shoes and would love to be able to run in them if it's pretty similar to BF |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've just started going over to the high school stadium and running BF on the artificial turf. It's wonderful. Last week I took a lap around the track, and it was ok, but I'm not sure my feet are ready for that yet. In addition I've started taking my shoes off when I enter my office and just stay in my stocking feet when I'm in the office. I do love running on the artifical turf. it's so soft and it's very smooth - no holes to worry about. |

They felt heavy compared to the five fingers but my legs adjusted to the difference rather quickly. It can take several months for the sole of your foot to thicken with skin that is why I wear the water shoes. I am not going to run barefoot on pavement in the winter where I live. So I figure why not wear water shoes year round. Sometimes I will wear thin socks if it is cold outside or if something in the water shoe is rubbing on the sole of my foot. Remember, take it easy at first. Your muscles and bones need to adjust and that can take up to a month if not longer. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm interested in ordering a pair of the FF, but I have a question. I usually wear 9's -- which is on the small side for a guy. On the Vibram website, it says their sizing for men starts at 10". Now, doing their sizing test (heel against the wall), my feet are just shy of 10". Think it's OK for me to order the size 10 (40)? Or should I get one of the women's size?

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I dont run barefoot. I would love to though. Unfortunately around me, I think Id end up with lots of rocks and glass and such in my feet! Ive tried a few different shoes to give me the feeling. I typically end up back in my nike free's. I havent been brave enough to take them above 6 or so miles (for the 5.0's taht is). I took the Nike 7.0's through about 18, and considered taking them through the whole marathon. Id love to find a pair I could take through a marathon, but still have the barefoot feeling. Eliminated alot of my problems whne I changed to the 5.0's to |

I'll do short runs in water shoes for a while, but for my du this weekend I'll wear normal running shoes. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() I saw a website that suggests buying the two closest sizes of the shoes and then returning the one that doesn't work. I was lucky and had a store nearby that had them in stock. It was a big risk for me to buy them at all but it might have been the best move I have ever made in training. I will warn you that I am still getting blisters after 2 months. The section on the heal seems to rub a bit. I have heard others say the same thing. I just put a band-aid on before I run or carry one with me just in case. I also get blisters on the bottom of my toes from "gripping" the ground. Even with this hassle it is still worth it! Good luck and give it time. |
