Veteran 111 Ridgefield, CT | Subject: Desert Island Discs Anyone interested in trying their hand at the BBC's Desert Island Discs? By way of background, guests are asked to choose the eight pieces of music they would take with them to a desert island. They also choose one book (excluding the Bible and the works of Shakespeare which are already deemed present on the island) and one luxury item which must be inanimate and have no practical use. Over time (this has been on the BBC since 1942) the rules have been modified to exclude Greatest Hits and Live albums. Feel free to critique and/or talk smack about the picks. My list is below (with some liberty taken with the Eagles (not entirely live nor greatest hits) and the 9 symphonies of Beethoven as it's technically more than one disc, if forced to chose I pick the disc with the 3rd and the 9th symphonies). And no, consolidating your entire music collection into one iPod track does not count. Eagles – Hell Freezes Over Bruce Springstein – Born to Run Martina McBride – Evolution Alan Jackson – Drive Mary Chapin Carpenter - Come On Come On George Fredric Handel – Messiah, John Eliot Gardiner, English Baroque Soloists Johann Sebastian Bach – Brandenburg Concertos, Festival Strings of Lucerne Ludwig Von Beethoven – Symphonies 1-9, Herbert von Karajan & Berliner Philharmoniker Book: "The World According to Garp" - John Irving Item: A piano. I don't know how to play but I'd have plenty of time to learn. |

Elite Veteran 777 flatland | Subject: RE: Desert Island Discs OOoooooooh. Music. You know I'm gonna respond about music. The idea of choosing only 8 CDs....that's the stuff of nightmares. This is a pretty mellow list for me, no punk, nothing loud, nothing really upbeat...I can't believe I left NIN's the Fragile off this list...man this was hard to do. Mary Chapin's Come On Come On is definitely way, way up on my list of favourites. Mine: David Bowie - is it cheating to take Sound+Vision? If so, then I guess Scary Monsters Elton John - Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy JS Bach's Brandenburg Concerti Emmylou Harris - Cowgirl's Prayer (although I don't think it's fair that I can't take Spyboy) Johnny Cash - The American IV Moulin Rouge Soundtrack (the first one) Bob Marley & The Wailers - Natty Dread Bela Fleck & The Flecktones - Cosmic Hippo Book: "Illuminatus!" by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson. Not that it's some tome of wonderment, but if I had only one thing to read over and over again, it had damn well better be complex and really long. Item: a very fat notebook full of blank paper. |

Master 2233 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: Desert Island Discs Hmm, let's see... Music: The Fragile - NIN (you can borrow it if you can find my camp Madeye) Space in your Face - Galactic Cowboys Southern Rock Opera - The Drive-By Truckers (is it cheating because it's a 2 disc "album"?) The Bends - Radiohead Bach's Violin Concerto in A Minor - Yehudi Menuhin's performance preferably Diesel and Dust - Midnight Oil 1999 - Prince Hail to the Thief - Radiohead Book: 100 Years of Solitude - Gabriel Garcia Marquez (in Spanish) Stuff: My Taiji pratice sword... It's not sharpened, so aside from bludgeoning warthogs (something I could do with a rock - considering I could do it at all), it's fairly useless. I think I need a judge's ruling on this one please. -Frank |

Plus, if Madeye can find your camp there's an outside chance I'd stumble upon it and could borrow some tunes. I prefer the Double Violin Concerto in D (Stern & Perlman) but enjoy the A concerto almost as much. It's no wonder iPods and anti-format (Jack) radio stations are so popular. We've only had three submissions so far and we've gone from NIN to Bach to Prince to Johnny Cash to Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. I'd listen to that station all day. |

Veteran 111 Ridgefield, CT | Subject: RE: Desert Island Discs Gatsby - 2005-06-28 12:52 PM A little confused. Are we talking 8 individual songs or 8 albums? 8 albums. If I was stuck on an island with only 8 songs they might as well all be Taps. Preferably, the albums will not include greatest hits, compliations, or live albums but exceptions are granted on an indivual basis |

Elite Veteran 777 flatland | Subject: RE: Desert Island Discs We'll have to get stranded on one of the strings of zillions of little islands, and try to rig some kind of desert island radio. I'm gonna need more than one Elton John album, and I may just shrivel up and die without some Nails. Fleetwood Mac. Mary Chapin Carpenter. You guys can be on my island radio station any day. Anyway, we're all triathletes, right? We can just swim from island to island to exchange discs. |

New user 22 St. Albert, Alberta | Subject: RE: Desert Island Discs 8 Albums... that's near impossible. This list is a bit of an "off the top of my head". Given hours to ponder this, I'm sure the list would be different, but here goes: U2 - Joshua Tree Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ELO - Out Of The Blue Underworld - Beaucoup Fish Pink Floyd - The Wall Peter Gabriel - Us Roger Waters - Radio KAOS Paul Simon - Graceland Book - Lord of the Rings Trilogy - J.R.R. Tolkien Item: Guitar - don't play, would love to learn (and because I'm guessing my 60GB iPod isn't allowed ) |

Extreme Veteran 511 Minneapolis, MN | Subject: RE: Desert Island Discs I was driving home last night and a song came on from one of the greatest (IMHO) rock albums ever made - Frampton Comes Alive. Too bad they don't allow "live" albums. That one wasn't a "greatest hits live" album when it was released, but it evolved into that because of all the hits it generated. All the good covers over the years are a testimony to the great songwriting on the album. If we could have a "live" album, that would be my pick. |

If we're lucky enough to all be stranded across an archipeligo, we can pool our supply coconuts and I should be able to put together some sort of rudimentary intra-island radio station -Frank This gets better by the minute. I was already set to swim my way to each respective island to borrow music and reading material but now I can just sit back and wait for installation of my cocunt wire. Of course, if it's anything like my cable installation I'll be waiting all day in the hot sun only to get a call saying the appointment was postponed a week. On a related note, I think it's interesting that our multidisciplinary approach to athletics spills over into music. The submission are eclectic within each list but fairly similar across the entire list. Apparently we have as much trouble picking one sport to focus on as we do picking one genre of music to listen to (or we are just renaissance athletes and music lovers). |
