I'm registering with a couple friends to do this as my (and their) first tri.  Anyone else doing this one or done it and have any tips or advice?  I don't have a wetsuit so I'm a little concerned about the water temperature but it's August so it can't be that bad right?

Oh there are LOTS of us on here that can write about PP...it's a fan favorite.

1-Water temp is very nice, but I have been in a wetsuit both times I have done the race, so it may just seem nice to me because of that...not sure what my final advice would be about a wetsuit and whether or not to wear one...I guess if you are a strong swimmer, you wouldn't need one???  Anyone else want to comment on that???

2-Lake Andrea, where the swim is, is a very nice lake to swim in...you don't have to deal with chop, or unusually cold water (like I mentioned above) so swim times are pretty quick.  If I remember correctly, I think it's like a big triangle...you swim out, turn right, then make another right, and swim back to start.  The only thing that CAN be a problem on that second right, is if it's sunny, then you are swimming DIRECTLY into the sun, and I know that has caused issues for people.  **If you buy the right goggles, like I just so happened to last year after I brought the wrong ones up, then it's fine! I think they were mirrored ...I would have to check!**

3-Transition area is really organized, and is right next to the swim, it's in a parking lot, so you don't have to worry about getting a lot of crud on your feet.

4-Bike - from what I remember, this is pretty flat.  There is one overpass as you exit to the left of the transition area, but nothing too terrible.  Overall, it's a beautiful course.  The sprint is one lap, and the OLY 2 laps.

5-Run - Again, just like the run, really flat.  It's a looped course, so if you know other people (or BT'ers) doing the race, you get to see them, so that's nice.  It's pretty open, meaning, NOT shaded, so if it's sunny and hot, be prepared for that.

6-Goodie Bag - One of the best around for the price!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Pleasant Prairie, and am SOOOOOO bummed that I am out of town this year and will not be participating.  They do a very good job at this race, and the volunteers are so nice...as are the paramedics.  Last year I ended up in the medical tent due to an injury that flared up, and let me just say....everyone, sooo great!

Hope this helps! GOOD LUCK and have a GREAT race!!

hmmm.  I'm thinking about doing this race as well.  It is a couple of weeks before Chicago Tri and would be a good tune up.  If you are worried about a wetsuit, you could probably rent one.  Not sure where you live, but I know Fleet Feet rents wetsuits.

Everything Miami9296 said.
I did the Oly distance  2 years ago.  Very nice race, even though that year the start was delayed for over an hour due to thunderstorms.  May do it this year, all depends on my sister.  If she wants to do it then I will  too.

Or to rent a wetsuit go to www.speedforrent.com ... a BTer owns that company and would gladly rent you one.

And no, it's not me.

If you do the Olympic - you swim directly into the sun. BUT...sighting on the smokestacks for the power plant keeps you on your line!

This is a very well run race. There's no parking at Lake Andrea - so make sure you follow the directions for parking and the shuttle.

All my plans are for nothing now.  I fell off my bike trying to clip in yesterday and broke my arm.    My first tri season will end without me running a single race.

You'll be fine without a wetsuit. Around Chicagoland, Lake Michigan, Lake Geneva, and Galena are really the only lakes you need a wetsuit. Even then, I've seen people swim without one.

You're not going to believe this because I don't even believe this...

The nurse practioner that told me my arm was fractured was apparently on crack.  I went to the ortho who looked over the x-rays, un-splinted my arm to examine and pronounced it not broken.  I'm such a girl I started crying I was so happy.  He gave me his blessing to continue training and compete so I got my registration in yesterday and I'll be there.  I have a little soreness in my wrist but I've done two 14 mile bike rides, been swimming and running with no problems.

It's so on!

I agree that it's usually pretty warm but lately that's not been the case because of the cold weather we've been having. I helped a friend at a race this morning in Milwaukee and the water temp was 49 degrees. About 10 people just gave up after the first 100m and another dozen or so were treated for hypothermia. Lake Michigan right now is 62 degrees per the Chicago Park District. I'd recommend a wetsuit.

Don't know the temp, but I swam there this past Sunday.   The water temp was very comfortable .  I wore a wetsuit, and will wear one when I race (oly), but I wear one anytime it's legal, as I get cold easily, but I'm sure many people would be fine without one.

I swam Lake Andrea with my kids on Sunday - water was in the 70s. My two youngest kids were practicing for the junior triathlon this coming weekend - both were in just suits and were fine (my son did about 1500 yards).

Weather is supposed to warm up towards the weekend - this is an inland lake - so it will be in the 70s. Should stay low enough to remain wetsuit legal, though.

Good morning everyone!  As the homepage of the Tri says: 1:19:18:01 left till race day!

I have a question for anyone who knows or has done this tri in the past:  Bike check-in is on the weekend schedule for Saturday from 10-6 as well as Race Day morning.  Has anyone checked in their bike on the day before or have you all just done it like normal and brought your bike into transition on race morning?

I did Chicago Accenture last year and it was no problem leaving my bike in Transition at 4am, then coming back to the race once my wave started....5 hours later.

I guess I'd just like some insight on being able to check your bike in the day before at this event.  Can we all get back into Transition on Sunday morning to truly set up our transition area?  I would assume so, just checking.  Please chime in with your theories.

You have to bring it on Saturday.  I've done this race 2x and have not had any issues.  But it will be very difficult to get your bike in Sunday morning.  There is no where to park the car as they have the entire lot shut down.  You will get bussed in from a remote lot.  And yes, you will have full access on Sunday morning to set up your transition.  So just leave the bike and bring the rest on Sunday.

It is a very, VERY well run race.  At least it has been the last 2 years.  They do it right.

Anybody wanna have dinner tomorrow night? If so let me know and I'll make reservations at the Radisson restaurant, which isn't too bad. Wavedog and the Crownys and I would probably like some company.

Yep.  And the Crowny's are staying at the Radisson so it is a nice short walk to the room afterwards.
