Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay, after 17 years and 5 locations with the same company, the company has decided to reorganize again. I accepted a nice severence package in lieu of relocating again and going through the hell of another reorganization. This gives my wife and I the chance to find work in the place of our choosing. We will probably leave New Orleans as job opportunities are not that great here and we would like to try some place new. Since we love to ride and race I would love to hear feedback on several of the places we are considering. In general, we don't want a big city (Dallas, Atlanta, Houston) and would like to stay in the South or Southwest US. I probably need a mid size city as opposed to a rural area as I am an accountant type. Right now are top choices are: Florida Panhandle Austin, TX Tampa, FL Baton Rouge, LA Jacksonville, FL We really love to bike and race so any feedback on the quality of those activities in these locations would be appreciated. If you have other suggestions, please feel free to share. Thanks |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Austin is pretty freakin' cool. It is really great place for the triathlete minded. Really look into it. |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Being a CO girl, born and raised, it was pretty hard on my when I moved to BFE Texas for school. Although I moved back to CO immediately after I graduated I did conclude that if I had to live in TX I would definitely, without a doubt move to Austin. LOVE IT. It has to be the prettiest place to live in Texas, it has a great atmosphere, the hills are great for training, its not overly huge... I really enjoyed Austin anytime I was there. Never spent a significant amount of time at the other places, although Tampa and Jacksonville are nice if you want a beach (duh)... and IMHO (no offence to anyone) I really am not the biggest fan of Baton Rouge. Ive only been there a couple of times once for a recruiting trip and then a few swim meets, but I personally dont think its as nice as Austin... just my personal opinion. GOOD LUCK!!! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ken, Let me preface this by saying that my opinion will be very biased, especially since I haven't visited most of the places you are considering. However, I absolutely love Austin, and it is at the top of the list of places I'd like to live, for several reasons. It is very pretty, mid-sized, has a huge fitness community that is very active, lots of nice hills to train on, etc. It is a pretty clean city, with great nightlife, lots of restaurants, great live music scene, and some really cool, down to earth people. Not to mention, it is centrally located in Texas, so you can get to dozens and dozens of tris and other events within just a 2 or 3 hour drive. The only bad things about Austin are the fact that like most growing areas, traffic is getting pretty nasty; and of course, there is that crappy university on 40 acres in the middle of the city...but we can look past that, can't we?? |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Check out the cost-of-living here in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. Great weather, great jobs (I work in Biotech), nice people (many transplants)...I just bought a brand new 1600 square ft. house for $115,000. |

Resident Curmudgeon![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Why Lafayette of course. Lots of opportunities, plenty to do, almost none of the big city problems. If not here, Austin also has a lot to offer. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I will plug Tampa. It is THE BEST place to live for a triathlete. Races practically every weekend starting in March and going through October. Open water swimmimg everywhere. Lots of YMCA's, one with a 50 yard pool. Now, I live in a suburb of Tampa and while sometimes I want to move closer in, there is one very important thing that keeps me right here: I live 2 miles from a north/south highway they built a few years ago, and along the highway they built a bike trail that is 42 MILES LONG! Plus there is an additional section that cuts through a nature preserve that is 13 miles round trip, so you could go on a 97 mile long ride and never go in traffic. On weekend mornings, by 7 am the parking lot is full of cars- triathletes and roadies flock here. Since it out and back, you don't get many multi-use people. The cost of living is not too high although the housing is going up a lot. Good luck with your decision. Jessica |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Since I live in a state with one of the highest state income tax rates, I thought you might be interested in learning the income rate rates for the states you have mentioned. FL - no income tax TX - no income tax LA - 2-6 Edited by Denise2003 2005-08-21 9:42 AM |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() With your parameters I would also pick Austin....hell, it's the home of Lance! |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'd think about the Nashville area also. Big city with a small town feel and withing minutes you can be out in the country. Lots to do around there even if you are not into country music. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I live near Tampa...you can swim-bike run year round here ![]() |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have to join the ranks and put in MTC about Austin, as well. There is water, it's cycle friendly enough for Lance, plenty of places to run, the City is VERY cool (this from a California girl) and you are in Texas hill country rather than just all flat all the time. I would also plug Tampa for the reasons stated above. Both cities are employment friendly, in my limited experience. |

Wife, Mother, Friend.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Third the Tampa Bay area. Football team leaves somethign to be desired, though. Also got pro baseball and hockey. Even got a public ice skating rink or two. Lots of golf like Sue said. Lots of fishing and plenty of beaches. Plenty of nightlife. I live outside town in a little suburb, sometimes wished I lived near Jess (TriTakeMeAway) just cause she can ride to that bike trail! That's an hour drive for me to get there. There's also another one closer in, a seven mile loop no traffic but gets plenty of multi purpose users on the weekends. We also have several IMBA certified off road trails if you like to off road bike ride. There's a tri club in St Pete. Tons of BTers here, home of the famous BT St A's get together. There's a race almost every weekend and training groups aplenty. Lots of YMCA's and other clubs with pools. I should work for the Chamber??? good luck |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If cycling and triathlon are priorities, why haven't you considered Boulder, CO? It fits within your parameters. I don't live there, but I race there, the town is really cool and bicycle-friendly. |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Another vote for the west coast of FL. I'm in Sarasota, about 50 miles south of Tampa. Great climate for training year 'round, beautiful beaches, supportive bike and running shops, and lots of triathletes, duathletes and cyclists of all ages and abilities (including Heather Gollnick who moved into the area over the summer). The biggest downside of the area is the price of real estate which currently borders on the ridiculous - median home price is $325,000. Mark |

Wife, Mother, Friend.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() about the home prices- if you move inland it seems to go down a bit. It's all about location. Homes around here going for 150 right now. Modest neighborhood, nothing too fancy. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Austin, there isn't another on your list that compares. For me it will be either Austin or Colorado Springs. |

Mark I LONG for a median home price of $325K. I think I'll be moving to Tampa, now. No wonder no one here is extolling the virtues of SF Bay Area, Ca ;-)..... |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, if you move to Tampa, you can buy my house. Anyone want a reasonably priced two bedroom 1928 Florida bungalow with hardwood floors and tall ceilings? |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This is really great info and keep it coming. I haven't thought of Nashville but it probably fits. Colorado is a little further west than we wanted to go but I will check it out too. This job I am leaving probably won't end till December and I have to stick around to the end, but I am going to start looking at prospects and the various real estate markets too. Thank you all for taking the time to share expertise. |

I would have but they said it had to be in the South/Southwest ;-) If you can handle the cost of living, it doesn't get any better than Northern California. I have lived and traveled many places including half my life overseas, and I have not found antyhing close or better. And...this is the land of tri! |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you look at CO, Boulder IS truly awesome, but housing is SUPER expensive in Boulder. Ridiculous in fact. Hence, I do not live in Boulder Anywhere along the front range of CO is great.....nice weather, lots of sun, snow melts fast. Good luck! We'll all want to know what you decide! |
