Subject: Pedals for short duathlon

Tomorrow I have a short duathlon and that will be my first one for me. Just triathlon so far.

The course is 4.7km/18.8km/4.8km where the bike course is lightly hilly.

I should be in the top 3 after the first running leg and I am quite weak on the bike so I wonder if I should use MTB pedals avoiding changing running shoes. I would save maybe 1-2mins between T1 and T2 but I do not know how much I can loose on the bike because of those pedals. Then I will try to recover on the second running leg.

What is your suggestion?

It should not add that much time to your transition if you practice changing shoes;in the duathlons I do I change from my running shoes to my cycling shoes in about 5 seconds, no problem using bungee-type elastic laces.

Keep the shoes clipped to the pedals and slip them on when you are out of transition and riding.  Then when you come back into T2, already have your feet out of the pedals and ready to slip on your running shoes again.

Some road shoes are very tight to get on (mine) and that can throw a hiccup into the mix of trying to get them on while riding.  That is why tri shoes are one big closer (or sometimes two) so that they are really easy to get on.

Good luck in the race!

If you save any more than 15 seconds you are really doing something wrong.
