![]() Swim
Comments: Not a bad swim. I had a good spot for the start right in the front and center. Went out a little hard to get away from the thrashing at the start but settled into a good pace after a few minutes. I never found a good person to draft so I was on my own for most of the swim. What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Long run from swim exit to rack location. My bare feet were not used to running on asphalt. I took some extra time to put on a cycling jersey and arm warmers for the ride. I'm glad I did as the ride was pretty cold. What would you do differently?: Toughen up the feet a bit to make running on asphalt/concrete easier. ![]() Bike
Comments: Definitely my weakest leg of the day. I didn't feel strong at all and the hills were a challenge. Eating and drinking was okay. I mixed one bottle with all the liquid calories I needed and washed it down with water from the aid stations. I was desperate for a bathroom break by the end of the ride which made it difficult to stay down low in the aero position. I was happy to get off the bike and start the run. What would you do differently?: I started off too hard even though my hr was in the proper range. Goes to show you can't count on hr alone. At the time my pace felt okay but looking back over the whole day I should have gone easier. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Another slow transition. I had to run a long distance in biking shoes which wasn't too fun. I took the time to change into dry socks because my feet were soaked from the rain and wet roads on the bike. ![]() Run
Comments: Started strong on the run. Kept hr and pace right where I wanted, about 150 bpm and 7:30/mi. Took gatorate at every station and 2 gu's in the first 6 miles to keep the energy levels up. Second half was much harder. Lacked energy even though I was taking in as much gu and gatorade as I could handle. Last 7 miles were around 8:30 pace. What would you do differently?: Again, don't count on hr for everything. Probably should have started a little easier. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Lots of food and water. What limited your ability to perform faster: The bike is my weakest leg. I need to bike bike bike this summer and work on my overall endurance. Event comments: I would highly recommend this race to anyone considering a half IM. Everything was well organized and the volunteers were incredible. For my first half I think I did okay, but I now know how to better pace myself for the next race. Last updated: 2005-02-01 12:00 AM
