I was planning to go to Ironman Florida this year as a spectator, but have decided to volunteer for the race instead of just standing around. Has anyone else ever volunteered for an IM? What was your experience?

I'm also a little nervous because I know I won't get out of there without signing up for 2010. Oh well. . . better get back in action.

Volunteering is a BLAST! I volunteered at IMFL last year so I could sign up for this year. So, thanks in advance for volunteering--we will appreciate having you out there! I volunteered for the finish line and got help put the finish line tape up for the finishers between 6-9PM--something like 1000+ people crossed the line in that timeframe and it was AWESOME to see the various emotions of the finishers.

I volunteered for IM Coure de l'aine (sp?) a few years back and had a blast.  I was body marking but I wished I could have volunteered for more (the wetsuit strippers are the most difficult volunteer spot to get).  Since then I have not been able to because I have little ones but once they are old enough to pay attention and help out themselves I anticipate them joining me handing out water or food on the run course or in the transitions helping get bags, putting away bikes, handing out glow sticks or something.

I volunteered at IM Wisconsin last year (and will again this year) in the T2 change area. Amazing experience! Lots of emotion in that room, and lots of encouragement. I definitely took notes on what people were putting in their T2 bags, and how it was organized. Learned a lot.

Really excited to be doing it again this year!
