White Bear racquet and Swim

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 21m 13s
Overall Rank = 16/50
Age Group = M40-49
Age Group Rank = 4/6
Pre-race routine:

Usual breakfast.
Event warmup:

Light jog, short bike ride to make sure everything was working OK and a quick 50 yards in the pool
Swim
  • 13m 41s
  • 600 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

First time pool swim. Everything was pretty much as I expected. I was looking for a swim time between 12 and 15 minutes and delivered. So no complaints there. Didn't push it too much this was a pace that I felt comfortable with.
This time is my actual swim time as I wore my stopwatch and timed myself.
What would you do differently?:

Gotta learn to swim faster I s'pose
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Ran from the pool outside up a short hill to the transition area that's why time is rather longer than expected
Pyro platforms are now history! I struggled getting into them. Pulled the toe clip out of its fixing screw so rode with my toe at a funny angle.
What would you do differently?:

Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and go with clipless pedals
Bike
  • 40m 27s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 19.43 mile/hr
Comments:

Timing is my own again its off as I didn't set my stopwatch at the right time.
There was a speed camera out on the route and I was timed at 21 mph through it.
All important road juctions were manned with marshalls guarding traffic and pointing you in the correct direction. Which was good as we crossed or joined main roads a few too many times for my liking really
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Some b@st@rd stole my bike spot in T2
What would you do differently?:

Put a security fence around my bike spot in the transition area.
Run
  • 24m 13s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

OK run. Really felt like I should have been able to run a bit faster. Sub 8's after a bike and I'm not happy. Darn I'm tough on myself
Post race
Warm down:

Erm nothing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I don't know. Did 3 days total rest in the run up to this race to ease my aching knees have an effect? Probably not.
First race with the pyro platforms was an unmitigated disaster. I could have picked up 30 seconds there with a cleaner mounting.
It also would have been nice to put my bike back where I found it too.

Event comments:

If you'd offered me a 1:25 time before the race I would have taken it. So I have to be pretty pleased with 1:21
Transition area was set up wrongly with the entrance and exit at the same end. So those who racked their bikes closest to the entry had a distinct advantage.

Good race, Ian! Congratulations!

It sounds like the transition area was in a different spot than when I did my race there last fall; we didn't have to run up a short hill to get to it, it was immediately outside the door from the pool. Apparently this setup was still problematic though, based on your description. That's too bad! I really don't understand why they can't cordon off some of that huge parking lot and use that for transition... ?  I know it would take a while to run to it out of the pool, but I think the setup would be so much better!

Anyway, great times! Good job!

Thanks Kelly;
They did cordon off a section of the car park for us. They just didn't cordon it off properly all they needed to do was have an entry at one end and the exit at the other end of he transitio area and it would have been perfect. Perhaps they can get it right for the fall race

...I suppose we could have racked our bikes the night before the event and gotten the best spots!

Moving the transition area to the parking lot was a step in the right direction. Couple more iterations and they'll have it dialed in.
