And do you do full body or splits when you lift?

Coming from a weightlifting background, I'm finding it hard to just lift 3 days a week. I keep wanting to head to the gym and pick up heavy things and put them down repeatedly! I refuse to break up my splits though. I just don't feel like a get a good enough lifting session in if I don't focus on no more than 3 muscle groups at a time. I usually try to not lift at all or just do a light full body session once or twice one week before a race though, so I can be sure my muscles are fully repaired going into a race.

I was just wondering what other peoples lifting routines are like while they train for endurence events.

twice.  Mondays and Wednesdays.

Basically just legs and back to help with s/b/r...

And of course core work.  I should do more chest, but neglect it.  It's not part of my plan....

I generally do full body workouts only because I tend to do full body lifts. If I do a power clean and push press, what "muscle" does that work? Darn near all of them. Right now I'm doing lots of kettlebell swings and snatches along with some presses and pull ups. I try to get in 3x a week. When I really start hitting s/b/r hard, I'll just do some barbell complexes for additional conditioning and to somewhat maintain strength.

I come from the same type of background as you, and it was quite hard to change my philosophy on lifting. You have to decide if you want to use your lifting to compliment your sbr or if you want to continue lifting for the purpose of gaining more muscle mass. I now do 3 complete body circuits a week. Following is the plan I do three times: (I do core work after biking)

Exercise Sets Min reps Max reps Min Wt. (lb) Max Wt. (lb)
LEGS Leg Press, Single Leg 3 50 50 135 135
CHEST Alternate DB Press 3 10 10 100 100
BACK Lateral pull-downs 3 10 10 210 210
CHEST Alternate Arm Incline DB Press 3 10 10 90 90
BACK One Arm Row 3 10 10 90 90
BACK Good Mornings 3 30 30
LEGS 2 Leg Squats 3 15 15 225 225

You are experienced in the gym.  Don't let cyclists "rules' dictate the training that is right for you.

Most of us dread finding the time and or motivation to lift.  The 2 or 3 times is what is needed.  If you are at a fitmess level and experience to do more without hurting yourself -go for it.

If you want to be lean - make sure that uis what type of workout you are doing.  Since you are experienced I prob don't need to tell you to rest muscle groups for repair between sessions and give your  entire body once a week.

I personally try to do strength training 3 times per week - twice with free weights, once core training.  I tend to neglect my lower body in strength training.

I run 4 or 5 times a week, I ride 2 or 3 times a week and swim once a week in the winter and twice that in better summer.

I lift 3x/week & also subscribe to the full body workout. Most workouts consist of 4 exercises at most & last 45 mins or less. For example, yesterday was EDT day. Workout A was Sqts & Push Press, Workout B was Bench & Pullups. 45 Mins including warm-up & believe me, if you have chosen the weight correctly, you know you had a workout.

I come from a bodybuilding background and used to lift 5-6 days (one body part per day) for about 45 min/session.  I really miss it but had to go to three days a week to fit in the tri stuff.

This is what I do and it looks as though I am maintaining my muscle:

Tues: legs and abs

Wed: shoulders, back and biceps

Thurs: tri, chest and abs

I prefer not to do all that in one session but I do 2-3 exercises per body part instead of 4-5 and less sets.  It kinda makes me sad just writing about it!

Fullbody 1-3 days a week.  I throw in shorter core sessions an additional 2-3 days a week.

Once or twice a week based off a plan.  I do both upper and lower, since it's reps vs. bulk.

I come from a baseball back ground where weights is a must. I was Lifting 5-6 times a week for 4-5 years. So I know what you mean about wanting to get the heavy weights out.

2 times a week Monday and Thursday
Mon - Back and Triceps Abs
Thurs - Chest and Biceps Abs

4 exercises per body part, 4 sets, sets change every 4 weeks, now Im on 10 8 6 4 and 1st set of 10 is 1 second up 1 second down, 8 is 2 sec up and 2 sec down, 6 is 3 sec up 3 sec down, 4 is 4 sec up 4 sec down. And super set a Back then Triceps exercise. either 4 sets of back then 4 sets of Triceps or 1 set back then 1 set triceps.

Splitting up this way Mondays Back works Biceps and Thurs Chest works triceps as well. Im 6'2" 210 and can rep 260-275 on bench 8 times in the off season. Trust me this is a work out! you will be sore and you will keep muscle on!!!! NO legs or shoulders because with all of the running biking and swimming your shoulders and knees will appreciate the less stress put on them by lifting!

Im training for Kansas 70.3 for the second year and it fits in great with
M - Lift Bike
T - Swim Run
W - OFF
R - Lift Bike
F - Swim Run
S - Bike
SU - Swim Run

If any one has any questions let me know

I do a crossfit style workout. They vary between strength and metabolic conditioning circuits. I do a lot of compound movements to maximize efficiency with limited time. I do them Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. I'll try to have a upper-body high rep and a lower body low rep on in the first half and vice versa in the second. I also add group exercise and some runs as additional cardio.

Currently I am lifting 2 days a week.  During the winter I am at 3 days/week.  My lift program is all time based rather than reps.  Pretty interesting, got it from a strength coach around where I live.  Started out at 30 seconds and ended the 3 day/week program at 2 minutes per lift.  2 day/week program is cut back significantly for the season.

I spent three months in the winter doing a rigorous 5 x 5 strength and mass building workout.  I got my squat up to 315 etc. then started training for endurance and the try.  I probs can't lift that much anymore, yet it was enough to maintain my strength for the rest of the season.

I haven't been lifting very much (maybe once every two weeks or so, and just do core, compound exercises - squats, military press, deadlifts, etc.) for strength maintenance.

I found that the strength I built up was more than enough and let me concentrate on everything else.

If you want to build strength you could do a three - day split at a minimum.  you could probs. maintain with a two per week schedule, depending on the workouts

Currently 4x a week. Legs/Shoulders - Chest/Back/Bi's - Powerlifts/Abs and Stability/Triceps

Most likely going to cut it down to 3x when it gets warm enough to be swimming/biking outside again.  I have a hard time getting less than 3x a week, I guess its the bodybuilder still trapped in me.
