What is a good/normal/average race pace for a sprint triathlon on the bike?  In training I usually average 25-27 mph but I don't want to over do it in the actual race.

You would be first in the bike with that pace in the sprint I did last year.  Winning male had a pace of 24.5 and female was 20.2.

That's some training average. How long can you go that fast?

I don't think there is a good answer to that question, but if you want to know what you might expect on any one course, than look up the splits for the race course and see what others have done in past years.  But, you can't make too much of a comparison between Sprint races as the distance is not standard.  And, terrain, weather,  and road conditions vary year-to-year.

By the way, your bike average would have smoked me on any course I have ever raced.

Yeah, is that average what your bike computer shows at the end of a ride? Or is that what you look down and see your speedometer showing?

I might roll at 25 mph, but my average will end up being around 19 mph.

Anyways, if you find a race you want to do, look at the results from last year to see what people in your AG are doing bike wise.

If you're training properly, and your average training pace is 25-27 mph, then you should be holding 30+ in a sprint.

Cool

25-27mph in training rides?  What else do you compete in?  I'd imagine at those speeds you'd be competing in criteriums, cat 2/3 maybe?

Longest I have been is 45 miles and that is what my computer says at the end of a ride.   I could be over doing my ride in training, but I am just looking for some thoughts of how to approach race day.  This will be my first triathlon so I am looking to just finish.  I'd like to finish top 100 however.

If you're doing 45 miles and your computer says 25 average mph at the end of the ride that is smokin.  Both sprints I've done that would probably win the bike.  Sounds to me like all you have to do is just back off the slightest amount so you can run after. You will still be FOP on the bike. Good luck to you!

I'll stand by my original estimate, if you can average 25-27, solo, on a 45-mile ride, then 30 or so would be a good place to start on a 13-mile bike portion of a sprint. If you got more at the halfway point, step it up a notch, just don't forget you have to run at the end.

Be sure to post your race report. Because in most sprints, you'll easily have the best bike split of the day.

Also, make your logs public... it's really helpful to the rest of the BT community to learn from the training of super-duper-speedy folks like yourself.

Your longest ride is 45 miles and yet to average 25mph. Something's not right here or you are the most talented beginner cyclist ever!

Not a question someone who does 26mph would be asking.. Something is going on!

Are you riding outside, or is this on a bike inside? Could it be km and not miles?

I'm not kidding, i just started this ordeal in January.  I used to play college baseball for 2 years but had to give it up.  I had a buddy who competed in triathlons and my girlfriend was training for a mini marathons, so I had to do something to stay in shape.

Well honey, you are "Lance" speed then on the bike.

You will certainly place 1st in your AG with that kind of average.

You have to go under Settings to make your Logs public.

You talking kilometers? Just checking

If you're talking MPH, then you need to drop triathlons and go get sponsored and really start training the bike exclusively I think.  Unless you already are and are just doing a sprint for fun.

I remember reading an old article on Lance saying how he could hold 31 or so for an hour and that was in his prime.  If you are holding 27 now then you need to go get on a serious team.

Well for example most of my rides end up avg 20-23 when you factor everything in. In sprints I'll be anywhere between 23-26mph. I'd say 28-29 in a sprint for you. I'd also probably recommend looking into cycling as a sport and double checking to make sure your computer isn't in km/h. If isn't.. then yea.. hats off to you.

Maybe his bike computer is not calibrated correctly.  I reset mine one time just as I was heading out and did a hard reset of the entire computer.  I finished my hour ride saw that I had around a 29 average.  I knew something was wrong right away.  I looked and it was Kilometers Per Hour and it was set to a 650 wheel versus a 700 wheel.  I was hoping that it was massive bike improvement.  Turned out to be user error    Doh.

If not, then congrats man.  You should destroy the field at a local sprint at least on the bike portion.
