I'm doing Square Lake as my final race of the season. I don't see any race reports posted on it from last year.... what is the course like? Big bike hills? Anything else notworthy about the race?

at 18 miles on the bike and 5 miles on the run, this is really a "tweener" race... longest I'll have done. I'm looking forward to it.

While I've never done the actual race, I have biked out their numerous times and in my opinion it's hilly. Plus some of the roads are pretty rough and the wind always seems to be blowing.

I would guess that area would make for a challenging race.

Also if anyone can add anything about the half ironman at square lake, this is going to be my first one. Is the course a hard one?

I haven't done the race for about 6 years, but the bike is hilly! I think there is a big downhill that they warn you about before you get there.

I bike out in that area all the time and have done the long course in 06.

The bike course is two loops.

The route west and north is on wide, smooth shoulders with some rollers. Some are longer uphills, but nothing too serious and there's plenty of downhills to go along with em.

Once you go east out of Scandia, the road is a bit rougher and there's a steep downhill with a right turn onto Hwy 95 a the bottom. Hwy 95 isn't in all that great of shape - bad tar and bad shoulders - and there's some larger rollers and a couple climbs while heading south.

The road back west to square lake is also a bit rough, but it's not all that far till you get back to the smooth road.

BTW the run course has nary a flat spot on it and takes it's toll.

For the swim, square lake is a bit cooler so bring a wetsuit if you have one especially for the long course.  There is a big hill to run up during T1.

I agree with the other posts- the bike course is a bit hilly, Hwy 95 can get pretty bumpy and wind does seem to be a factor on the course.  The long course is a 2x loop with a water exchange at the transition area.

Also, the temp can vary - last year for the long course, I believe it was close to 50 degrees (maybe less) and light rain at the start.  By the end of the race it was sunny and in the 70's.

Good luck to all !!

I'm doing the short course. I went to the lake with my wife a week or two ago but forgot to bring my swimsuit, so I wasn't able to do anything but wade a bit. Seemed like a nice lake though.

I'll be going the short course for the first time this year.  This will be the longest race I've attempted as well, so I'm curious to see how I feel.  I'll find out if I'm ready to try an Olympic.

Square lake is very clear and only has a few weeds. It's only 100+ ft deep out in the middle.

I am in for the Half Iron.  It will be my first.  I am plenty nervous.

I road one lap on the loop course 4 weeks ago.  It has many rolling hills.  One long bumpy downhill.  It's too bad the long down hill is so bumpy.  If it was smoother you could go really really fast.

I didn't check the run course.

About 8 miles of the run course (4 out, 4 back)is on the bike course so you've had a pretty good preview of it. Rollers abound on the other 5.1 as well.

I am in for the short course, although I must say that it's none to short for a sprint. I am a bit concerned as my swimming training is not taking place. The more I read about the course, the more unprepared I feel. I'll be there and do my best and enjoy the day.

I am also in for my first HIM.  I am comfortable with shorter distances, feel I even "race" my Olys.  However, my first HIM brings a whole new set of issues.  Am I ready for these distances in the same race?  Will my nutrition plan be adequate?  Etc.  Going from 2.5 hours to hopefully somewhere under 6.0 hours is a big jump.  I feel like a newbie all over again and I guess rightfully so.

Is there a finish time that you must finish by to be considered a finisher?  Like ironman 15 hours?  What is the absolute finish time for a half ironman?

I am comfortable running sprint distance.  I have finished a couple Olympic distance.  This will be my first half iron.  I am sweating the bike and run.  I am not a hill climber in either event.  I am going to really need to such it up for this distance.

Nutrition is going to be a big thing for me.  I am still a newbie and I don't quite have this down.

Holy crap!! Now I only have 15 hours to finish Most IM's give you 17 hours to finish the event. Most events do have cut-off times.  They are pretty generous as far as time goes.

Square lake, run by Vacation Sports, probably doesn't have a "finish time" rule.  There are few rules and regs with this particular race organization.  I would imagine that you can expect the post-race food/water to run out, though, unless you a fast finisher.  So if you plan to be in the bottom 25% (just a guess) you will want to bring your own supplies.

square lake is a nice hilly , but bumpy bike route...  pretty lousy organizationally speaking..  not even a medal at the end.. maybe its changed.. doubt it though...  be sure to go down to the lake again though for the hot dogs.. those were pretty tasty..

i got a few elevation maps if that helps.. I missed hte bike start by a few miles.. (doh!).. but the elevation should give you a good idea on the challanges..

bike (2 loops)  the big downhill is coming down from Scandia into St. Crouix River

run route.. pretty easy..

After looking at the elavation maps, I'm thinking I should have done a few more hills this summer. Oh well, last tri of the year. It should be fun.

This saturday is going to be my first tri ever and I am feeling pretty good about it. Still a little unsure about how well my legs are going to perform on the run section.

What a perfect race day it will be. The water temp should be in the comfy range, high 60's or 70.

The cool temps will give me a bit of a boost for the hills. I'm a flatlander through and through.
