Member![]() | ![]() ... with inter racial couples? I'm white and my fiancee is asian. Most of the time we can go out in public without incident. However, some times we come across people that are just plain ignorant. My fiancee (been in the US since she was 6 mos. old) is more 'americanized' than most people born in the US but people still say dumb things. They ask her if she speaks Chinese (she's Korean), they assume she's Chinese (she's Korean), and lots of times they talk down to her as if she doesn't understand anything. Then there are the 'looks'. After ten years in a relationship like this you're able to figure out who the people are who have a problem with your relationship. I just wonder why, in the new global world we live in, people can still be so closed minded... Tom |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wasn't it Will Smith who said he wanted Cameron Diaz as his love interest for Hitch, but then he said the American people weren't ready for a black/white interracial couple? So he got Eva Mendes instead. Forget that I didn't even know until that point that "hispanic" in the US was a separate race! I've noticed the following on tv: - White with white and black with black - Standard. - Black with any shade other than white - Acceptable. Seen on many tv shows. - White with hispanic - Pushing boundaries. - Black with white - Extremely rare. Such a couple is usually presented to make a point about racism. It's a shame that such categorization exists. I also find it funny that you're only white if you have no black, hispanic or asian ancestors. But if you have, let's say, a black great grandmother but the rest of your ancestors are white, you are automatically categorized as black. Not to sound all hippy-dippy, but things would be a lot better if we recognized that we are all one race (human). |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There are several families of people from different racial backgrounds where our kids grew up and went to school. I am sure it was difficult for them at times but let me tell you, they have some great kids. Music, sports, academics, everything, these kids were exceptional. I have no idea whether there was a cause and effect relationship, but the kids from these families are just great. We knew them as our children's friends as well as my wife's students. I hope the same kind of future for you if you decide you want to have children.

Member![]() | ![]() The funny part is, these ignorant people can watch movies with mixed race couples, but when they encounter it in real life they act all weird. I guess only celebrities are allowed to date who they want. TriComet: Thanks for the congrats. The wedding plans are underway. It's only been 2 weeks of planning and she's already at her wits end. Sometimes dealing with ignorant people can be fun. Once in a while I get to tear into someone and expose their prejudice. Usually they don't even know what hit them and have no response. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() y'know, I totally get how annoying it is to have my relationship misunderstood, to be patronized, to be excluded, judged, etc. On the other hand, I am SO guilty of what might be construed as "looks." When I see interracial couples I always smile real big and look for kids. As wacky as it is, I swear interracial kids are more interesting and beautiful, of the bi/multiracial children of my friends (some by differently raced spouses, some by adoption) every single one is completely beautiful and goofy and fun, and I love the intercultural stuff that goes on in those homes. I have one friend who has chinese babies and their house is full of cool chinese art, and teh kids have chinese middle names and they always have parties for various chinese holidays. My friend who is white and has a black husband makes a huge effort to have all kinds of different images of different kinds of people in their home, and she is meticulous about what books movies etc they have (her son is 6) They are more aware of sterotypes and negative images and stuff than I am perhaps bc they are so aware of what the world can do to "different" kids. anyway, I guess I am saying, have kids real soon so I can gawk at them and love them and squeal and smooch them all over...

![]() | ![]() I think - at least I hope - this mindset is slowly dying off. I find that my grandparents and people their age are completely intolerant of inter-racial relationships. My parents age group is not okay with it, but they don't bust out with inappropriate comments (like my gramma does). My age group (20-something) - well - 2 of my best friends are married to someone of a different race. I, too, can't WAIT to see their kids!! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have seen different responses, depending on where you live. I am an asian grew up in Asia. Case 1. Cousin came to college in the U.S., married a white guy and lived in MA. No problem. Case 2. Another cousin, still living in Asia, married a German guy. No problem either. Case 3. A male friend of mine who went to college in LA (the southern state, not the city in CA), courted and eventually married a white southern girl. When they were dating, white guys would threaten/fight asian guy, maknig comments about "who do you think you are dating one of our girls...." Case 4. Not really a case. My bf (asian, grew up in same home town as I did) once mentioned his parents would have problem if he dated a black girl, but should be ok if he dated an American girl. Also know many asian parents trying to forbid their daughter dating american guys. Seen too many family fights. Also an interesting observation. There are way more white male/asian female couples than white female/asian male couples. Asian male friends claim to be less willing to date female of other races. Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well I can tell you living in NY most of my life and then moving to the South was a pretty eye opening experience. Racial tension in Memphis is bad, and everyone is very open about it. I dont get it either. I would have to say it is probably the worst in the country. As far as rednecks go, there are just as many in NY as there are in the south. Its an ignorance thing and I for one have no tolarance for it. Its very sad........ |

Member![]() | ![]() celeb ithil, A lot of the white male/asian female couples that I know, and even in my case, have a situation where the asian female is adopted by a white couple. It was popular back in the seventies. Perhaps there is a correlation there? I'm not sure. |

Have a good weekend. As my deep-southern boss has explained it to me, you, Russ, are not a redneck. You are a good old boy. Don't shoot the messenger, I'll give you JD's address. And here is my take. I was married to a Black/Chinese/Brit mix Trinidadian, who looks black and identifies as West Indian first, black second. We lived in Rhode Island, Delaware and North Carolina. North Carolinians dealt with it best in terms of the fewest rude ignorant remarks and glares. My theory is that this is because there are more black people in the south and thus more daily interactions, though who knows? And there are a fair number of people who respond to my son the way possum describes, which is fine for the most part, though I worry that the 'he's so beautiful' will go to his head. We praise his brains and kindness, etc, though yes, he is gorgeous and I do tell him so. Once, in the Georgia part of the Appalachian trail, my then-boyfriend (Korean-American) and I were accosted by a cracker who told me I was quote, 'a traitor to my race'. *Deliverance theme song swells in the background* Interestingly, the worse outright racism I've ever faced (I am white, though tan |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() oneword - 2006-02-17 11:37 AM Ok, this is what drives me nuts. There is NO SUCH as 'race' except as in the human race. This is all skin color/cultural crap. And crap is exactly what it is. Why can't people simply be happy? Geesh. yes, in theory. But it's a little naive to think that we could "outgrow" years of conditioning and ingrained pattersn of behavior so easily.... |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My wife is from El Salvador. It's very rare that white folks have a problem with our relationship, it's usually hispanics that have a problem (she's looked at more often than not as a sellout). I would say for every white person that has an issue with us, there are ten hispanics that take issue. For whatever reason, I think whites are more racially sensitive than others in this country. What saddens me the most is that her family can't accept it. Oh well, life goes on. |
