Just got a new filet knife I need to try out! I know that feeling. Once the kids got to be teenagers I was too busy to do the things I really love. I have made it a priority to get back to them and practice for retirement in a few years....and fishing tops the list. (a good cigar every now and then is in the top 10 as well) |

It's still in the 30's and 40's here, but we're headed to my parents' in TX in a few weeks and we're planning a fishing trip into the Gulf of Mexico for when we're there. I've done some half-day trips into the Delaware Bay with my son when we go to the beach, but it's always high summer and we don't usually catch much other than a few croakers and the occasional small shark. My parents want to come fishing in TX too, so it'll be the whole family--parents, my wife and son, and I, fishing for grouper and snapper, drinking beer and hanging out on the boat all day. Sounds like a good time. My son really wants to do an overnight "tuna safari" in Texas where you go out for two full days and fish for tuna. |

I've twice gone offshore on 3 day/ 2 night trips out of Texas fishing the oil rigs in the gulf at night and trolling for marlin/tuna during the day.......on trip #2 6 of us left shore with 15 cases of beer and a case of bourbon......I think. Just a great time! Last month when my kid had a race in Tampa I was able to get us out for a half day of snook/sea trout fishing before we had to catch our flight home. Got off the water at 2pm in Tampa and was home in St. Louis, Mo. at 7pm....... crazy. The kids caught 15 or 20 snook and 25-30 sea trout in 4 hours.

Pro 9391 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Any of you boys do any fishing? My problem is I don't eat fish. I love fishing and used to take the kids all the time, but we were the "catch and release" type fishermen. They have a local hatchery that lets you fish catch and release with barbless hooks. It's great for the kids with all day catches. I think this is what's called cheating in the angler world. |

Back when I was taking ichthyology in college I had a state license (issued by the governor's office) to collect fish by "any means necessary". Well the bio dept. decided to do a fish fry and I was selected to get the fish. So we went to a nearby park pond and treated it with rotenone. While we were netting the fish that came to the surface, city police and a game warden came up and asked what we were doing. I told them we were fishing and had put out rotenone to catch fish. I then asked if they would like to see my fishing license. They all chuckled and figured they had me, when I reached in my wallet and pulled out the permit. To say they were pissed is an understatement. To make a long story short, I didn't get arrested or fined and the fish fry went as planned. |

When I was in the Navy we boarded a Tuna boat that was alleged to have hidden drugs and had to remove over 40 tons of tuna from the storage hold. We worked almost 60 hours straight moving it all and of course there were no drugs to party with when we were done. |

My mom sent me a bunch of brochures of some local charter companies, but we haven't chosen anyone-- I'd be happy to take a recommendation. Thanks! Side note-- have you seen any of that reality series on the National Geographic Channel about the family seafood business in Galveston? It's called "Big Fish Texas", and it's based on the place that my folks get all their fresh seafood. I always assumed it was a little hole-in-the wall down by the docks--their retail space is barely 500 square feet, but it's apparently a massive, family owned and run operation that sells literally tons of fresh seafood all over the US. |

Take me! I'm not too far from Galveston and I love me some fresh tuna right out of the sea! Used to buy it from the guys on the side of the road when I lived in Hawaii. |

Pro 6838 Tejas | Subject: RE: Any of you boys do any fishing? Jonah, My friend does his tuna trips out of Port Aransas and uses Fisherman's Wharf. The trips are usually 50 hours and they go out to Perdido rig. http://wharfcat.com.. Out of Galveston he's been on Captain Johns; he didn't have a glowing review for them, but he said they will get you on the fish. Plus the trips are shorter. He said to avoid Galveston Party boats company. He also suggested you might consider driving over to Venice,La. He knows a guy that charters out of there and he will get me the company name. I'll post it up when I hear back from him. He said tuna fishing has probably run it's course for the year, but you might be able to get in a trip and pick up a few of them. Upside is there are tons of other species out on those rigs, so you can fill the cooler. If you're interested in bay fishing, http://www.ccatexas.org/guides/upper-coast-guides/ . I've been out with George Knighten a few times myself and he will work hard to get you a load of trout and reds in East Bay. It's a quick day trip without the 8 hour boat ride, so you might consider it as an option. It has been over 15 years since I chartered him, but he was a pretty decent guy so I doubt his product has diminished. He put us on a school of reds every time I went with him and they are a blast to catch. Wow, that is a disjointed mess I just typed, but hopefully you can sort out some useful information from it! Let me know if I needto clarify anything for you. |
