Subject: Mountain bike sizing?

I am interested in getting a mountain bike for both trail rides and possibly for use in the winter.  I am hoping to buy used.

How does the sizing work?  I don't really want to go to a bike shop and pretend that I will buy their new bike.  I think that for a $75-100 used bike I am happy with "close enough".

I'm 5'6'' with a 30 inch inseam.  Any thoughts?

A 15" frame will probably be "close enough."

MTBs are much more flexible in terms of sizing.... you could probably ride a 15 or 17.5 (or thereabouts). Here's a good rule of thumb quickie: http://www.coloradocyclist.com/bikefit//>
FWIW, I am thinking about selling mine... I ride a 17.5, but could probably go bigger. I am at the max seatpost height.

competitivecyclist.com and wrenchscience.com have quick and dirty sizing calcs.

As someone said, there is more flexability with frames size selection.  I lot of it is preference or the type of riding you want to do.  For road, size and fit are more important cuz road riding is road riding.

As for MTB's it depends if you want to do cross country, all mountain, downhill, etc...  Many prefer small frames to be more agile.  I do a lot of XC stuff, so I don't mind a bigger frame set up with a high seat and comfortable for epic rides.
