Subject: Salmonella in dog treats

My sister e-mailed me from her CDC conference to let me know about this:

http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/22/us/fda-jerky-pet-treats-warning/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Basically, no concrete details are known, but some dogs and cats are getting sick from some jerky treats. Most were chicken or duck based, and produced in China, but not all.

So, if you've got a pet - and you feed them jerky treats - watch for vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite or slugishness.

And that's my PSA for the day!

This is NOT Salmonella.  They do not know what it is.  They only know it is from China.  They have tested 1200 samples and still don't know the source of the illness/fatalities.

my dog eats poop and decapitates bunnies.  how sick are we talking?  in 7 years there hasn't been anything he couldn't poop out in a day or so.

I believe 580 dog deaths were reported since 2007 from the jerky treats, so sick enough to die (possibly).

Dog training techniques have surprising parallels to triathlon training and race preparation. All the lessons I THOUGHT were for my dogs started seeming very applicable to me! Here's what I learned.

Running does not cause injury. Poor running form does. Running is more enjoyable, and safer if you know what you’re doing. And yes, even old dogs can learn new tricks.
