I've been lurking for about a week now and I can't believe how much I'm learning!

I live on Long Island and will be doing my 1st triathlon in New Jersey in September. I'm so excited, and nervous.

I have a question that seems really ridiculous but here goes....

If I decide to wear a wetsuit, at what point do I put it on? How does the whole beginning of the race work?

I think I'm more nervous about the beginning and the infamous transition that I keep hearing about then the actual race. LOL

Well, thanks and any help would be appreciated.

Welcome and good luck in your tri!  As far as the wetsuit, I put it on with enough time to warm up in the water (if allowed), then I leave it on, at least halfway (the bottom half obviously) while I wait to get in the water with my wave.  It depends on how hot it is!

Usually you start in a group (or wave) based on age group or male/female or another grouping system.  This way, there aren't a few hundred people starting at once.

Go watch a tri in your area - hang out at the start and watch at the transition area.

Good luck!

Welcome to the site! The transitions do take a while to master, so don't stress too much about them. Practice makes perfect sort of thing. I'm sure others have already said (haven't read the other responses) the you put the wetsuit on any time before your race start. Some put it on an hour before, some right before they jump in the water to race. Just remember to take it with you if they close off the transition area before the race starts or you might not be able to get back to it.

Good luck with your race!
