Subject: Human Resources Question
I emailed (and mailed) an application for a job with the town.
Only after I submitted it did I realize I misidentified one of my references.
I wrote he was the owner of a local business when in fact he is a manager.
He is a well known coach and I help him with a local youth sports team.
He is on the bottom of my 6 person reference list.

This is a small town. People know him.
How bad did I screw up. How can I fix this ASAP?

I do not think this is a huge deal, unless perhaps you were applying for a position that would include extreme attention to detail in documentation.

I would just send a brief follow-up e-mail with the correction and an apology.  I would begin with your original e-mail, so the subject line is intact (assuming it references the job title, etc) and reply to it - but add "Correction" in the subject line.  Are you beyond the application date at this point?  I would do this quickly regardless.

I have only been in the position of job seeker, but this seems reasonable to me. People make mistakes, it's how you handle them that counts.

This x1000. I've been in charge of hiring before, and if you reached out to make something right in a professional way, that would certainly attract my attention. And when you have a sea of resumes, most of which are pretty similar, that kind of thing can help!

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I agree completely.  It would tell me a lot about your character if I received an email with the correction.

Hope it turned out well, and good luck on the job hunt.

Just respond ASAP and correct yourself. Not a problem making a mistake, just catch it!

(I'm an HR director by day.... I see this stuff all the time)
