Sensei ![]() | ![]() ...revisited. I'm shopping around again and here is a little history. I have shot plenty, and have a gun safety class under my belt. I'm looking for something to just have fun to shoot, but could also double for some home defense. ALSO, I would like my wife to be able to use it if needed. Under $600-$700 as well. I had basically settled on the Glock17 and then eventually get the Advantage Arms .22 conversion kit to run cheaper ammo AND something a little less powerful for the wife to shoot. Obviously load with hydroshock or the like for home defense. BUT, snooping around, found some interesting offerings from Beretta, Ruger, Taurus, S&W... That come in cheaper and look pretty cool. Worth considering? And on a completely side note - what's a M1911 descendent running these days? (1191 series) They don't sell them at Bass Pro, which is what I have been looking at online. I of course have tons of shop here in Vegas, so I don't have to buy from BP... |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() IIWY: Smith and Wesson 357 in nickel with a 6" barrel. Deadly accurate, deadly and can shoot less expensive 38 rounds. I'm biased toward revolvers as I simply am really good with one. Semi-auto is point and pray, but law enforcement must use them for good reason. I just don't care for the Glock style 9mm frame. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Decent 1911 is going to run you ~1k. for a first time handgun and something you want to use for home defense and allow your wife to able to use if the unfortunate situation arises, i would recommend a medium framed .357 revolver. won't jam, and easy to operate; you just pull the trigger. you can take it to the range and shoot .38 Special rounds through it all day without breaking the bank, and keep some .357 HP and FMJ rounds alternated in the cylinder for home defense. edit: i have a taurus .357, and much prefer it over all the rugers i have tried out. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Taurus Millenium Pro is a nice gun, so is the slimline version. The nice thing about the Taurus is that you can lock the gun with an allen type key for storing with small children around. |

I'm sold on the internal safety of the Glocks, but an external safety would probably make the wife a bit more comfortable. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just an FYI: A place near me (Fin, Feather, & Fur Outfitters) has a Ruger 1911 (45ACP, 5" barrel, stainless, 8 rnd) for $700, and a comparable S&W 1911 for $740. |

Like Sept 18, 2001 first in the air. He had a Glock 9mm with fluorescent highlighted iron sights. He said not to try him on it, but I was never any good with the gun. But a S&W; I could pick which side of the line you wanted me to split at 50 yards. |

Funny you should mention... I found that exact one - tactical version that's super sweet. |

![]() | ![]() .50 cal Desert Eagle. Sure, the rounds are $5 a piece, but that'll make you be sure of your shot... Truthfully though, I lof my M1991 Gold Cup National Match. I think a base 1911 ACP runs around $700. Mine is prob worth around $1500. Do not get the Colt Commander... It jams often, only has a 5 rd mag, and if you hold it wrong when firing, it'll slice open your hand with the slide. |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you are going to get a handgun for home defense, I recommend a revolver. I have a .357. I can shoot cheaper .38 ammo. I don't worry about jamming. And, it has excellent stopping power. It is also fun to shoot. The Mossberg 500 is also great home defense. You can get the "chainsaw" version for the fun factor and intruder intimidation. |

![]() Don't ask us and don't look at "stopping power" at all. Ignore what they look like for a bit. Go to the gun store, pick up and quick aim literally every handgun in the store. You won't like some just because they don't feel right. Some won't aim instinctively for you and some will just suck. This will get you down to a handful, 6 or so. Find a range that rents handguns. Rent each of those and buy a box (FMJ is fine) of ammo for each. Shoot each through at least two/three magazines. This will get you down to 2 or 3 that you like. Some will have ridges that do not work with your hand, some will have confusing, to you, controls, some will be difficult to load for you, some you won't be able to hit the paper with or will look like shotgun patterning. Now you're down to 2 or 3. NOW start asking and looking at "stopping power" Only now. Actually by now you've already figured out which one you want so it's just a formality to ask these questions. But shoot all the possibles. If you flinch from recoil, it's not right. If it bites you, it's not right. If it doesn't aim naturally, it's not right. Remember the .22 you like shooting is a MUCH better defensive firearm than the .50 you've left in the drawer because you're scared of it. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I tend to think a firearm like the glock trumps a revolver for home defense or cc. My model 23 and 19 hold at least 14 rounds. My 19 has stove-piped twice in 5,000 rounds and was easily remedied by racking the slide. Glock is cliche, but it's so fricken practical, it might as well be a Honda or a Toyota. Both of my sidearms are accessible in a finger code safe by my bed. Now if we're talking home defense, let's talk 12 gauge. If we're talking good cc and good first gun, glock 19 is likely the most popular first gun and the price (cost of the gun, cost of ammo) within your budget. 17 is nice, but the 19 cc's better. 19 is a goo all-arounder. YMMV |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm suprised nobody mentioned a springfield XD. Plenty of striker fired polymer guns to choose from, but the XD just has a great combination of features. Excellent ergonomics, point and sight aquisition. Striker position indicator. Loaded chamber indicator. Double safety mechanisim... trigger saftey system ala Glock, hand grip safety ala 1911. You have to be holding the gun and pulling the trigger for it to shoot. Excellent quality and accuracy right out of the box. All calibers, every possible size. The real special one is the .45. I have smallish hands. A double stack mag of .45 sounds nice but it is too big. The XD45 is 13 rounds that feel like a 9mm. It is sooo comfortable in my hand... but that does not mean it is right for you and the wife. I just say it because if you are going to have just one gun, a 13+1 of .45 is a good one to have. I don't consider the XD to be the end all be all, plenty of high quality race guns to choose from... but whith all the features you get for the money, I think they have set the bar for what you are looking at. For the same money, I don't see how Glock manages to win. Next up from that for me would be a H&K... but those are outside your price range... mine too. Shotguns are a good choice, but they are a handful and the wife might not be willing to pick it up. And the last thing I am going to buy a gun for is to "intimidate" an intruder. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Iused to carry a 9mm. In FL it's kind of hard to conceal such a large gun. Now I carry a Ruger LCP 380. It's super light and super thin. Go check one out. Ignore all the talk about "stopping power". Even a .22 to the face is going to stop all but the most wacked out criminals. |

Just scanning the posts and have the following comments. First most woman seem to be more comfortable with revolvers over semi autos. second you do not need 1k to get good 1911 I have a metro arms American Classic II, I shoot my wife shoots, and my kids shoot, it is a great 1911 400.00 at a gun show used. My wife now has 2 .38' she loves them they are easy to load easy to handle and go boom when she wants them to. So forget what you want at least for your wife take her to a gun show and spend an hour or two walking around and handling the guns, she will find out what feels good. Talk to the venders and let her ask questions who knows you may walk out with one for each of you. My wife and I are going to a gun show tomorrow she intends to get us a pair of .22 revolvers just to target shoot with. Who am I to disagree. You do not have to spend alot to get a good gun. I suggest the following brands for quality at a good price. Metro Arms, Bersa, Charter Arms, Ruger. Oh yea be sure to dry fire, a hammerless has a very hard trigger pull and both of you may not like that so try first this is what makes a gun show so much better than a store. Here is a link so you can look up where a show http://www.gunshows-usa.com/ |

For the money, I LOVE my XD. Very good firearm for a very good price. I've never cared for Glocks at all. |
