Subject: Obama...2012 Person of the Year

From Time: "And Obama is both the symbol and in some ways the architect of this new America."

I am just not sold on what Mr. Obama has in mind for this "new America".

edit for format

I can't disagree with your quoted statement, but my issue is that I really liked the old America.

Would you say America of the 80's was the same as the America of the 50's?  One could argue that in the 80's it was a new America.  So 30 years on, we are in yet another new America, that frankly looks nothing like the old America.  That has been shaped by 30 years of political, economical and cultural change.

Change happens.

Yes, change happens and I usually embrace it.  However, not so much with Mr. Obama's vision for America.

I'd bet there's a big percentage of that 51% that has no clue what Obama's vision is for America.  I'm sure the same can be said for the other side too.

I've often wondered if we had 100% of the people vote and they all knew exactly what all sides stood for how America would vote.

If you mean what they really, really stood for, they probably wouldn't vote.

If you believe that, then you should agree with Time's pick.

Their man of the year is not the greatest person of the year.  It's who they think had the biggest impact on the world.  Hitler won it, Stalin won it twice, the Ayatollah Khomeini won it.  They talked about it being Osama Bin Laden in 2001, but there was too much of a backlash and they gave it to Giuliani.

I nominate Obama for "person who has won the most awards for doing jack-squat" award.

It’s hardly an “award”. Even Time doesn’t characterize it as such. It’s an acknowledgement of the person, people or things that have been the primary news drivers for the preceeding year.
Stalin, Kenneth Starr, “the Computer”, Middle America, the Ayatolla Khomeini, “American Women”, and “You” (yes, Time’s 2006 “Person of the Year” was “You”) have all been recognized in the past.

No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.
