Expert 760 Mt. Morris, IL | Subject: November Challenge It will be here before we know it. I know many of you are in the October run challenge so I just want to put out an idea. I read an article (for the life of me I can't remember where) about balance in training. The author assigned a point value for a specified distance in each discipline. I thought this might be a good way to do a challenge based on points. I have not been on BT much for the last 8 months or so, so if it has been done, maybe someone can help. Example of point system Swim 100 yards = 1 point Bike 1 mile = 1 point Run 1/4 mile = 1 point The goal would be to balance your training to come out with the points even. Pro 6582 Melbourne FL | Subject: RE: November Challenge I followed a very similar system when I 1st came to BT. I used 3 miles = 1 pt on the bike and 1 mile = 1 pt for the run, swim was the same. I didn't use it for balance though, I used it to determine how much I was doing, like 50 points for the week or the like. I'm out for Nov though, it my down month before the training starts in earnest with the annual Dec swim challenge! |

I'm going to be focused on run training for the next few months, with maybe some biking and swimming thrown in for cross training. It sounds like a great idea, though! Would love to do this in the spring. |

So I figured that this would give everyone a chance to pick their own goal. It can be running/swimming/biking - or anything else that you've wanted to accomplish. What do you think? And the "penalty" will probably be nothing more than adding a signature line for the month of December. Probably something like: Winners: Anyone who achieves more than 90% of their goal is a WINNER. Add a signature line that says: “I am a WINNER. I won the November Challenge!” Attempters: Anyone who achieves between 80 – 90% of their goal is an Attempter. Add a signature line that says: “I did a great job on the November Challenge!” Nonwinners: Anyone who achieves less than 80% of their goal is a Nonwinner. Add a signature line that says: “I will train harder next month!” If there was enough interest, I'd set up teams. But I haven't figured out yet how to group the teams. (Randomly, by geographic location, by the goals, etc.) I've started putting it on paper, but some of it is still in my head. Dee |

Geo is fun 'cause you might get to meet folks from your area ... could also generally group people by their goals (it'd be a loose affiliation, but useful) ... This is also an awesome concept... for me Down Under heading into tri season its probably more relevant! (well except for the running since Im going to be on the elliptical for a LONG time) Just one thing... any chance it can be made applicable for those who use metric or train by time rather than distance too? (i say this because I AM a big baby about the dark ) |

I was about to suggest that we put up a poll, and just go with the majority vote. But it looks like opinion, so far, is on the side of everyone picking their own goal. This is a bit scary to me - 'cause I haven't worked out all the details yet! LOL But I really DO like your idea of a points based challenge, too. After all, this is a TRI site, so we SHOULD be doing TRI activities, right? So.... How about if we do the "You pick the goal" challenge for November? Then, it looks like December is going to be a Swim Challenge.... And maybe we can do your Points Based Challenge after tha - either January or some month after that? (Spring was suggested by several people.) As for captains, yep, we're going to need some, I think! OK, you're hired! (As is anyone else who wants to captain.) I must warn you though, the pay isn't great. Thanks for being so nice about this. You came by and suggested a GREAT challenge. (I really DO like it!) Yes, I bet you DO dig the boys vs girls lineup. I've been reading your team thread, remember? LOL Hm.... another month of those kind of pics? Hmmmm!!!! But actually, I haven't given much thought to grouping people into teams yet. OK, so far for ideas, we have: - Boys vs girls - Location - Goals Maybe also factor in some level of experience. Hm.
