Subject: Painful cramp...lower left abdominal area

Last night, during my 3 mile run, I got a sharp stitch in my left low abdomen.  I ran through it, but it really hurt.

The weird stuff:

When I ran uphill, it went away completely.

When I ran faster (70% of sprint effort), it hurt less

When I walked, it went away.

When I slowed to a crawl (13 minute mile or slower), it hurt less

It was weird and painful.  Has anyone else had this happen to them?  My hydration and nutrition should have been fine.  I had a 12 oz and a banana about 20 minutes before the run, which is pretty normal.

im thinkin' buckel down to an 8 OZ banana!! lol jk

Yeah if i eat anything before my run (2 hours or less) i will always get a stitch. I wish they go away wen i run uphill....thats all i do..... i just drink more and wai for my food to digest. or quit, and hit the cycling.

I get these periodically. There have been several good threads regarding side stitches on BT, if you care to poke around. From personal experience:

 Short Term Fixes-

-Focus on controlled breathing. Inhale deeply using your diaphragm, causing your belly to expand. Exhale fully (to the extent possible). I will sometimes forcefully exhale all the air from my lungs, to the point where I can feel my abs contract- a few of these will usually do the trick. Try to avoid quick, shallow breathing.

-Maintain good running form (upright posture, relaxed shoulders, etc.)

-Avoid eating 2 hours or so before a run. When you do eat, keep it light and easily digestible. Stay hydrated throughout the day to aid digestion.

 Long Term Fixes-

-Do some ab exercises. I think they're boring, but I've definitely noticed a drop-off in side stitches since I started a somewhat regular routine of post-run crunches.

-Get more fit! Ultimately, the best way to get rid of em is to get in better shape. Or so I've heard.

Oh thanks...now I'm trying to figure out if I exhale when my left or right foot lands, and wondering if I could change it even if I wanted to!

Seriously though, thanks!

Tonight, I had a horrible run after having corned beef with cabbage for dinner!

It is something you can work on changing.  I did when I was having a lot of side stitches.  You have to slow down a little and focus on when you are breathing.  It's a little awkward at first, but it gets easier when you keep doing it.
