Subject: Frustrated- I want to do MORE!!

Ok so I know that it takes time to get to where I need to be and I am just a beginner to the triathlon world but I just don’t feel like I’m getting anywhere with my training. I want to push myself harder but I don’t want to overdo it and end up hurting myself. I am fallowing a program right now and I like it, I just want to do more than it is recommending I do. Should I stick to my program or is it ok if I kick it up a notch? Any suggestions?

I think it's safe to add a bit more.  I see from your logs that you like biking.  I say go for more/longer bike rides!  Each spring I add a ridiculous amount of biking at once and it's usually fine. JUst be careful about stretching well afterwards.  I recommend yoga too, for your hips and hamstrings, which will start to get tight with a lot of biking.  You could definitely swim more too.

I am always cautious about running because I find it so easy to get injured.  Be careful there.  Maybe add really long warmup/cooldown slow jogs or walks to extend the time?

Also, be careful how much overall time you add.  If you start to feel fatigued don't get discouraged, just dial it back a bit until you're back to feeling yourself.  And don't forget to eat more   That's the best part.

Good luck and welcome to the sport!

Great question but difficult to accurately answer w/o knowing your athletic background.

I coach a beginner triathlete that posed a similar question to me and after reviewing his athlete profile and gaining a thorough understanding of not only his limiters but also his endurance background (which was marathon running) we were able to ramp up his run volume higher than I would normally do for someone else so that we could work more frequently on getting his top end speed up.

However, keep in mind that if you want to do "more" be careful about just adding "more" so that you don't work your ATP-CP and Glycolytic systems too much each week; which is the most common mistake new triathletes make and more often than not results in twinges or tightness in muscles all the way to performance inhibiting injuries. Many new triathletes think "harder is better" and "you have to train fast to get fast." But these ideas effectuated in a vacuum of knowledge actually end up hindering athletic performance.

general plans are just that; general guidlines not designed specifically to match your needs. If the plan you are following feels too easy add a bit more, if you can hanlde the work (recover from session to session, do all sessions, you are not having any aches/pains) then add a bit more. Eventually you'll find how much you can handle...
