Subject: RE: Frustrated- I want to do MORE!!mindymin21 - 2009-06-24 10:26 AM
Ok so I know that it takes time to get to where I need to be and I am just a beginner to the triathlon world but I just don’t feel like I’m getting anywhere with my training. I want to push myself harder but I don’t want to overdo it and end up hurting myself. I am fallowing a program right now and I like it, I just want to do more than it is recommending I do. Should I stick to my program or is it ok if I kick it up a notch? Any suggestions?
Great question but difficult to accurately answer w/o knowing your athletic background.
I coach a beginner triathlete that posed a similar question to me and after reviewing his athlete profile and gaining a thorough understanding of not only his limiters but also his endurance background (which was marathon running ) we were able to ramp up his run volume higher than I would normally do for someone else so that we could work more frequently on getting his top end speed up.
However, keep in mind that if you want to do "more" be careful about just adding "more" so that you don't work your ATP-CP and Glycolytic systems too much each week; which is the most common mistake new triathletes make and more often than not results in twinges or tightness in muscles all the way to performance inhibiting injuries. Many new triathletes think "harder is better" and "you have to train fast to get fast." But these ideas effectuated in a vacuum of knowledge actually end up hindering athletic performance.
