Subject: Daniels Running Formula - VDOT Question

Bought/Read this book based on several BT'ers strong recommendations.  I'm trying to set my VDOT as accurately as possible so I can follow the "Red Level" plan, which I think is a good starting point for me.  Daniels uses race times as the basis for VDOT, and I've only been Tri-ing for about 14 weeks and 1 sprint race with no prior recent running before that.  In my race, I blew on the run, which was half expected due to conditioning issues - there's only so much improvement to be made in 12 weeks prior to your first race after all (without overdoing it).  I also think Daniels meant running races only for consideration when setting VDOT, which would or should be faster as a stand alone time vs completing a tri?

Anyway, I'm exited to follow Daniels training plan in what I call "phase 2", with about 10 weeks to go leading up into my 2nd tri.  I just want to make sure that my VDOT is as close to his intention as possible.  If I use that one race, which was a sprint tri with the first 1.5 miles uphill, second downhill, and my first one ever, then my VDOT would be 32.  Last week I ran at a good clip at the track, and did 2 miles in just under 16 min, which would be a VDOT of 38.  There's a big difference between those VDOT's when setting E or T pace so I want to get some advice.

This leads me into another question... Today I did the first workout, which was 30 minutes at E pace.  I used 38 as my VDOT and found that the pace was actually slow enough that I had to concentrate on going slower as I ran, and I still finished faster than the E pace.  I counted steps 3 different times over 60 seconds and was at 150, 154, 152.  Should I have been taking shorter, choppier steps or longer but slower strides?

Daniels would likely say, go race.

But, for the time being, you can use 38 and see how it goes.  Of course, you should note that Daniels' plans are for runing only--not for triathlon preperation.  The pacing info can still be useful, but the plans themselves may not fit your schedule.

You could probably do a time trial, maybe 5K, to test your V-dot.  Your 2 miler is a much better gauge than the end of your first tri.  Also, see if there are some 5K local run races in your area and maybe do that as a test.

I'd use 38 for now, and retest soon.

Not sure if you still need responses.  I am new here and just saw this.  Anyway, Daniels is difficult to use for VDOT if you are not racing a lot.  Do you run Tempo or Threshold workouts?  If you know the feeling of a tempo run, I would recommend using that to find your VDOT.  Warm up really well and run a few miles at 'T' pace.  Then use his "pace" chart with E, T, R, I paces on it to find the VDOT that matches your T pace.  That's what I do when I won't be racing for a while or am not in racing shape.  It does rely on your knowing how T pace should feel.

The other response is correct, though, that VDOT is used strictly for running.  You certainly would not want to have a goal race pace from the VDOT chart after swimming and biking.

You use your VDOT to determine your pace ranges for E, M, T, I, and R.  That's it.

Jorge had a link to someone who had done a conversion to tri results using the running VDOT measurements which was interesting to look at.  But in absence of that, take a sprint tri 5k result and the time split should be about your open 10k meaurement.  Take a 10k olympic run and that would be your approximate open half marathon minute per mile split.

Establishing a VDOT is to set up your training paces.  And yes, E should feel easy.
