I am training for my first one in October. For those who have done it before, has your nutrition changed a lot during your training? How so?

Thanks for any input!

Hum, I eat more, but that is about it.  I try and eat healthy year round and if you do that well, all you should need to do is increase your calorie intake for when your increasing your runs.  Careful not to overdo it though, which is a fairly common thing.  Well, I guess I do end up with more calories on those silly little gels on my long runs then I would when not training for a tri.

My day-to-day nutrition remained pretty much the same. I mean, I didn't change up the kinds of food I ate just because I was marathon training. (is that what you were asking?)

But any time you ramp up your volume significantly, you're going to have to replace those calories in order to properly recover. So besides eating MORE, I wouldn't say the actual nutrition changed much. The only thing I can spefically remember is buying Clif Builder Bars to eat immediately after my 15+ mile runs, solely for the 20g of protein in them.

Yes-to clarify, my question was more of how much do people normally increase the volume of food while training. I keep a healthy diet year-round, but just want to make sure I'm eating enough to have enough energy while training, but without overdoing it. I suppose though, the answer is really relative to the individual depending on size, etc. So I guess my question doesn't really have an answer. But I think overall I just wanted to see what other people out there did and what nutrition while training means to you. Also, while training, what changes overall did you experience in your body?

Same as the others. I am in my fifth marathon training cycle - and mostly i am conscious of eating continuously. I am not always good at it but it's important to me to get in 3 meals a day with snacks in between.  I can tell when I am not eating enough because I crave junk food and for a few days it's all I want.  I am no scientist but I would guess that it's my body getting a quick calorie fill.
I have no problem having junk food - i do love it but I know on the whole i should be making better choices and i'd rather it be occassional or one 'treat' a day as opposed to my meals because i won't feel good in training or overall.
