Pre-race routine:

Set up transition - try not to freak out
Swim
  • 10m 10s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

COLD with no wetsuit...got kicke din the face. Ended up doing a lot of breasdtstroke which slowed me down. But still a decent swim for me since it was my first OW attempt ever. All training has been in the pool
What would you do differently?:

Not panic when I got kicked...more freestyle
Transition 1
  • 06m 46s
Comments:

T1 was slow. Very muddy, and my plan had been to take it easy and learn from this first tri.
What would you do differently?:

SPEED UP!! (my 3 sport times averaged out to a 112th place finish, but my transitions were so slow, it knocked me to 138th)
Bike
  • 24m
  • 6.2 miles
  • 15.50 mile/hr
Comments:

I was having so much fun, I forgot that this was not a tour, but a race, and I needed to speed it up! So halfway through, my pace increased a lot, or else my average would have been worse!
What would you do differently?:

Considering how much fun I was having...nothing! But to be more competetive, I need to ride fast the whole time. I had it in me, but was just "cruising" for the first half of the bike.
Transition 2
  • 05m 27s
Comments:

Again, a slow transition by design. Needed to maintain my sanity, hydration and overall readiness for the 5k.
What would you do differently?:

Speed it up!
Run
  • 34m 48s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I don't care what my rank was. This was a GREAT run for me overall, as I set a PB by approx 5 minutes. And I ran the whole way!! Yippee I am happy.
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing
Post race
Warm down:

Not much...I was higher than a kite from the experience.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being a beginner, slow transitions, and still not in top shape.

Event comments:

I have nothing to compare this to since it was my first tri, but I can't imagine having a better experience the first time out. I can't wait for the next one!

I know the panic feeling in the water. Every time I start a swim it seems like I start to have a panic attack. The only thing I can figure out is that the adrenaline combined with a mass of other people kicking and hitting you causes me to start out too fast. My next one I am just going to hang back and let everyone else kick and hit each other. 138 out of 173 is great for your first tri and it looks like you have already identified some areas you can improve. Keep it up!

Nice job on your first Tri - sounds like you had a great time, and learned a few things in the process. Congrats on the 5k improvement also - something about being in a race environment that makes you want to go faster!!!!Dennis

You did great for your first time.  The first time is really a learning experience which is what you had, and also sounds like you had a blast doing it.  Good job!
