Pre-race routine:

Go up at 8 A.M. Nice to sleep in for a change. Had eggs and toast. Drove to Cherry Creek rez and drove the course. Lots of patches of ice. I was afraid I had the wrong bike today. I rode my road bike with no treads. It turned out fine.
Event warmup:

Ran about 3/4 of a mile and got the HR up and did a few pick ups and got some free goodies. I was in the 3rd wave. Waves went off every 2 minutes.
Run
  • 30m 14s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

First run segment I started strong and was out in front. 2 guys passed me. I cought them both on the bike and passed them.
Second run was longer of course and I had one guy pass me right away, I passed him again on the bike. Another guy passed me at the turn around and then I repassed him and beat him into T2. Picked up the pace at the turn around since I stayed conservative and was beginning to have tight quads. They loosened up on the way back.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Comments:

Wore my tennis shoes the whole time and I liked that in the transitions,, even though I lost time on the bike with them.

Comments:

I was dying on the hills. A moutain biker that I caught beat me to the top. Of course he is the regional xterra champion and went to the world championship for xterra. I didn't feel too bad. We played tag for a while. I tried to gap him near the end but he caught me and beat me to the finish. He was tough. My hat goes off to him for powering away on a mountain bike.
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

Ran a mile easy to loosen up the legs. THey were sore. Hot tub at the club and an endurox shake.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

LT fitness.

Event comments:

Great winter race. Nice goodies. Nike key chains, go fast drinks, hammer gels, e-caps. Nice food at the end. Nutella and croisants, pepsi.

The race never seems to disappoint in the "chilly cheeks" department. Congratulations - sounds like you had fun. I'd put myself through a lot of pain to be able to eat nutella and croissants at the end!!

Super impressive! Mark, one thing I know from just visiting CO is that it is a fabulous state to train in, esp. the biking...Great going. Will be looking forward to reading more of your race reports

Nice race! I'm sorry I missed it. Looks like there were more people than the first race. Don't worry about that MTBer. I'll catch you on the last one!
