The wife and I along with a couple of training buddies are making the hike to Thailand for the half. Has anyone here done that race? Any tips and tricks to surviving? We are from the Houston, Texas area and train in heat and humidity year round so we are aclimated to the weather. I hear there are a couple of real steep hills on the bike course. Secrets to make it to the top without walking?

When is the HIM on Phuket?  My wife and I were there in February.  We didn't stay long because we were enroute to other islands but Phuket would be a nice destination to do a HIM and then take off for some island hopping recovery time.

The water is bath-water warm maybe from Texas you'd expect that.  We didn't see many hills while there but I believe it gets more mountainous in the south and west part of the island which we didn't see.  The temps were 32 deg. Celsius daily.  I think you'll have a great time.

I`m so envious.  I`d go back in a flash.  I`ll have to remember the HIM and plan to do it another year.

Have fun.  Let us know how you make out - a detailed race report.

Haven't run it but several guys in the neighborhood have/are going to. I've heard the bike course is a killer due to hills but the run isn't bad. Water temps are normally comfortable in SE Asia--defintiely not wetsuit-legal!  Can't make it this year as the date conflicts with a favorite half-marathon in Cambodia and it's tough for me to get leave at end of the school term; hope to make either the 70.3 or the "international" distance race (there's also a race intermediate between Oly and 70.3) next year. Best of luck and make sure you have your hydration figured out for our heat and humidity!

I'm doing the 'international' one the week before and I think the course is similar. Have heard the same stories about the course being hilly and one of the guys who is doing it with us did it last year. He didn't have to push his bike up the hills but he saw a lot doing it. Have seen it recommended to change your back cog to 11-28 to make it a bit easier. I think it also depends if you can climb in the saddle because the people he saw in trouble it was because their back wheels were slipping on the road (it is the monsoon season so it will probably rain). This usually happens when you stand to climb and less so when sitting.
