Subject: Games people play

In the 80s, my sisters and I and our respective bf's/dh's (10 of us) gathered 'round my mother's large dining table and a highly competitive game of Pictionary or Trivia ensued. There was always an argument between my oldest sis and her dh if he (the dh) missed a question or drew something she couldn't guess; we always counted on this for a good laugh. Poor guy graduated at the top of his Engineering class at Va Tech and top 10% at Duke Law but my sister would just harass the heck out of him if he couldn't properly draw a shovel (so she could identify it). She would also get very excited and jump out of her chair, snap her fingers (the Latin finger snap) and shout "Umm! Umm! Umm!" while trying to spit out the word that was just on the tip of her tongue.

These days, I love to play Cranium with my sister, her DH and my nephews. I love the way the game challenges you to use both the right and left sides of your brain (I'm very much a left brainer). They will be staying with me over the holidays, so I've got Cranium on my mind (no pun intended). It's not as intense as our games with oldest sis' but it's lots of good laughs and the boys absolutely HATE to lose.

What's your fav game for family gatherings?

We play lots of games, Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit for board games, and Texas Hold 'em for cards, and dominoes too.

I can't wait!

On one side of my family (modern family units tend to be polyagonal) we play "Elephant in the corner" It's great, you have to talk about everything EXCEPT the one thing that everyone is thinking (usually what a mess one family member has made of her life). It's most definately not a drinking game.

Sorry for the  thread drift

Monopoly.  We made up our own rules.
Chinese chess during recesses in school.  I lost to the same guy 7 games in a row.
Reversi/othello.  I beat my dad big times.
Chinese checkers (those start shape board you play with marbles).  It can take over an hour if played by a full house of 6 people, and lead to fights.
Risk.  I used to haul the box over to my friend's and play with his younger siblings.

I remember playing backgammon with Janicewhokeepsmehumble for an entire New Year's Day while drinking champagne and OJ and watching football games.  Did I mention that Geezerette #1 was born in August, nearly September?

I love backgammon. I used to play it before my swim practice and during meets (back in the day).

I live in a family of gamblers from NOLA. When I was young, maybe 14, I started playing boure' (pronounced "boo-ray" with the adults, which is kinda cajun poker, but it's a trump game like bridge. If you don't take a trick or don't follow the rules, you match the pot on the next hand, and if no one takes a majority of tricks, the pot rolls over. So even though it's nickel ante game,  we routinely had pots over 20 bucks and several times over $100.

Now it's Texas hold 'em.

We also play Cranium and Pictionary.  When the game involves, blood and non-blood team members, the Geezerettes have an unfair advantage.   I remember the Cranium game with Geezerette #3 drawing blindfolded for Geezerette #1.  Geezerette #1 seeing a circle and a half circle on the page and exclaiming "Easter basket".    The G1's DH playing on the opposite team could not believe it was not clairvoyance or secret code.  Very good fun.

In college we played a lot of cribbage.

With friends now, Cranium is fun.  And monopoly.  Or trivial pursuit.

With my parents, the game of choice is Scrabble.  And my Mom always wins.

I once played Cranium with 2 aussies, 1 brit and a chick from Seattle. Nobody knew Margaritaville except the Seattle chick! I can't hum Margaritaville very well anyway.

I think there's a "hum Nights in White Satin" card too - or something like that. Impossible!!!

On one side of the family, we always play cards-usually bid spades.

On the other side, we play dominoes (Chicken Foot, anyone?) or Hell (basically solitare for everyone), and if the weather's nice croquet.

However, most of my family gives me a hard time becuase I'm really competative. I get upset if I'm losing. I'm trying to work on it though... The latest incident is was at a croquet game where my sister hit me out, and I wouldn't leave her alone. I totally forgot about winning. My only goal was to chase her down and send her ball totally off the field. And, we did get into a big arguement about it, in front of many family members...I'll never live that down.

Well, sure, if you use words like "cromulent", "quigybo", and "embiggen."

Ha. We could probably give each other a run for the money. There might be a knockdown dragout fight by the end of the game.

Yeah... you can't accidentally knock over the board when you're behind either (when you plan online).

Spelling edit.

Lots of card games in my family.  Lately, my wife and I had been playing a lot of SkipBo until the dog ate the cards.  Maybe it was because I smeared peanut butter on them (not such a fan of SkipBo).  I prefer games like Cribbage, 500, Spades, Hearts, etc.  A little of the ubiquitous Texas Hold 'Em with the guys now and then.

Boggle and Scrabble are definitely my favorite among the word games especially to see how far you can push the made up words limit. Innocent

Taboo's the best among the turnbestfriendsintoenemies games.

I love playing Hearts with my mom. She is excellent at Hearts. Sneaky, too - master of the quiet "oh, did I just shoot the moon?" strategy.

What a shame

She's sandbagging.  The question is, "Did she win both times?"
