Subject: Your chance to be Omniscient, Wise & Forward Thinking

Here’s your opportunity to prove how good your contingency planning skills are.

Here’s the proposed scenario:

The Earth’s oceans will rise 24 inches in the next 50 years. Many consequences, foreseen and unforeseen, will ensue. Lands will become uninhabitable or unsuitable for growing food. Fresh water supplies will become contaminated by sea water. Industry will be dramatically affected by changing coastlines. Economies will be severely destabilized.

Paint a picture of what the future will look like, make a case for your assumptions, and describe how you would position yourself to survive and/or thrive during this world-wide sea change.

  • What changes/plans would you make in anticipation of the catastrophic effects?
  • Where would you live/move to?
  • What occupation change would you make?
  • What kind of investments would you make?
  • Would you arm yourself?
  • Etc, etc.

Assume that you DO have finite resources, meaning you must be able to hypothetically afford (with your current occupation or future occupation) any changes to your current lifestyle.

To get your creative juices flowing, here's an article on what is happening in Bangladesh.

You know how they have those explorer cd-rom games? Explore the Amazon, Explore the West - where you have to buy food/cattle/supplies/etc, trade along the way? This is like that but without the neat graphics.

Is this a gradual rise over the 50 years, or a sudden, all at once deal, or an exponential sort of rise?

How much land will be underwater if the water level rises 2 feet?

How many people are aware of this situation?  Small group, is everyone aware but most ignoring, or is there massive action?

Is it avoidable if we take action? And how much land in Statesboro, GA am I allowed to buy?

I'm assuming that the event occurs, otherwise there wouldn't be much point of the scenario.....

That's crazy! But as it turns out, Statesboro wouldn't be affected, as it's 258 feet above sea level. Damn.

  1. Is this a gradual rise over the 50 years, or a sudden, all at once deal, or an exponential sort of rise?
  2. How much land will be underwater if the water level rises 2 feet?
  3. How many people are aware of this situation?  Small group, is everyone aware but most ignoring, or is there massive action?

  1. Gradual
  2. That's what you're supposed to figure out!
  3. Like most things - some people are paying attention, some people are in denial and putting their head in the sand, some people are paralyzed by fear. Kind of like the comments in that article. Bangladesh is flooding and people are still in denial!

Jim - you can buy as much land as you can hypothetically-realistically afford.

Remember when you learned about the Great Depression when you were in school? Did you ever think "If I had known the Great Depression was coming, I would have prepared by doing these things..."?

I would upgrade to a full-length sleeved wetsuit and bone up on my swim training.

Oops, sorry, misread the subject.  I thought this was my chance to be a wise-"red bike"

Easy solution... instead of wasting $$$ on a war in the Middle East that is ultimately fruitless, pour those billions into:

And how would you, personally, pay for those projects? Are you a closet trust fund baby?

Here's one thing I'd do: I'd buy stock in blue crab aquaculture, because the change in salinity of the Chesapeake Bay would make it inhospitable for the crustaceans.

As an individual, I know the human race will not take action to avert or mitigate any climatic risk (like global warming) or economic risk (like exhaustion of global oil supplies). The desire to ignore these risks in favour of what the French would call "la pensée magique" (magic thought) is too strong.

So, with that in mind I would evaluate my particular situation and encourage others to evaluate theirs. I live high enough above sea level to not be particularly concerned about the rise is water level. Quebec is rich in fresh water and hydroelectric power. We, in all likelihood would be seen as the new Saudi Arabia, rich in what the rest of the world wants, water. This richness, though, would put us at risk to our neighbours to the south who would probably like to avail themselves of some of our riches. Assuming we could supply the US sufficiently in fresh water, and that the US is willing and able to pay, we would be fine. OTOH, if not, we could be at risk for invasion by the US.

In the case of an invasion I don't see very much that we could do. Lie back and think of England, I guess.

Nothing.  Not a darn thing.

I'll be 81 at that point, and would have lovely beachfront property.

How do you know that a 2' rise in sea level isn't going to swallow up more land than expected, hmmmmm?

Either way, still not doing a damn thing.

Maybe we should start with a smaller question.

What would this massive population dislocation do to the economy? Would we (and the rest of the world) be hit with a Humongous Depression?

Your average nor'easter produces a storm surge >24". I'd say if you've so far been sea-water free, you'd be OK with a 2 foot rise.
