Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Other than a "my first tri"... or a special type of tri (like an Irongirl to encourage women or Danskin) I don't really get the whole "giving out a medal" thing for a finishing sprint. *AG medals should be handed out!* I know it's nice and probably draws more headcount... and maybe I'm jaded to the distances... but it just seems a bit over the top. What do you think? Edited by KSH 2009-07-31 4:27 PM |

Definitely need one for long course though, that is an accomplishment. just my .02 ![]() |

No disrespect to the people who just do sprints... it just seems like... well, they don't give finishers medals for 5K's... ya know? It's kind of along those lines. |

That is not what I'm saying. Someone who runs a 5K or 10K is a runner... but they don't get finishers medals. In the running world, only if you do longer distances do you get a medal. So it just struck me as odd that in tri's... for sprints... we give out medals. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've only done 2 sprints. I got a medal at my second but I thought that was because it was a Y sponsored race and for whatever reason the YMCA thinks EVERONE needs a medal. I didn't know other sprints gave out medals. I don't have a problem with it but I don't need one either. I gave mine to one of my little girls - she thought it was cool. I would have preferred a nicer shirt cause the one I got is crap. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am not sure what the big deal is. They probably only pay less than a dollar for them, may even be free paid for my a sponsor. TBH I have never been in a race running or Tri that does that. |

I'm pretty sure I still have every one of them. I'll see them and think `Oh I remember that race, how fun!' so while they're from a short race, it's a nice keepsake. And lots of people do sprints as their first tri. It's nice to have something by which to remember your first tri. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I run without a garmin/heart rate monitor watch. :-D I like the medals, but I agree that for sprints, I would really like a nicer shirt. But the medals make you feel like - well at least I finished. And the one for the NYC Tri IS really kewl. And you know what, a lot of training goes into doing an oly - so there. (in a mood now). How about if they gave out medals for super-sprints? It's just that - I have really REALLY REALLY out of shape friends who want me to help them train for a sprint. And believe me, doing all of that swimming, biking and running is a real challenge. I even know a personal trainer who is training for his first sprint who I see at the gym every morning. The guy is quite a runner and talk about buff - the man has no body fat. But he really flails in the water but yet he is at the gym pool every day training the best he can. I really think that he deserves a medal if he finishes that sprint. And my out of shape friends too. What's wrong with the medal? Sure my sprint medal is in the drawer, but it is still sweet to get it. I mean a sprint may be super easy for you or me and for a lot of people on this board, but for the people I am talking about - sprints are quite the personal challenge and feat. Being a triathlete is no easy thing. I mean. Sure. Now - those little sprints are super easy - especially since we have all of the equipment and such. But think about when you first got started. Two years ago, I wouldn't have thought that an event comprising of a 0.5 mile swim, a 15 mile bike, and a 3 mile run was easy. That's just my $0.02. dbw27 |

It's nice to have something by which to remember your first tri. x2. I'm down with whatever the peeps want. I'm sure a finishers' medal would mean a great deal to someone, not unlike a gazillion of us on BT, who completed a journey and got to the finish line after slaying whatever demons they had, regardless of length of race. I've got a closet full, and a story with each. I like 'em. ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well now I am disappointed. I have done two sprints and an Oly this year and haven't gotten a medal for any of them. Man, I think I'm getting the shaft. Anyway, I do agree that the t-shirt and food is good enough for me on the sprints, but make sure they don't forget the beer. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I received a finishers medal for an 8K. As it was my first running event in nearly a decade, and it took me several months to train up to that distance, it was a nice thought. It's not like I wear it and parade it around, but it's a nice memento from what was for me, a very special race. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ATLsbr - 2009-07-31 5:29 PM But I will add that some schools won't give out Fs or correct papers in red ink because it can hurt children's self-esteem. So the medals going to everyone is probably part of the sissification of America where "Everybody is a winner!!!". You know, that's fine that you think that, but you could probably keep that to yourself or say it in a more tactful manner. You're on a board focused beginners in this sport. For many it's quite an achievement and one of the hardest things they've ever done. Let's not belittle that here. |
