Looking forward to a second competition at Carlyle.  It is a great event.  I really enjoyed the course.

Last year didn't play out as planned, I was woefully unprepared for the heat of that day and struggled on the run. Frown   It was my first Oly and first open water swim.  I have spent some time working on my sighting for the swim and improving my pre-race hydration/nutrition.

Shooting for a 2:45 finish this year.

How about everybody else?

I am looking for REVENGE! My training was lacking - BIG TIME. I wasted some time on the bike... dropped a bottle and went back to retrieve it (too hot to go without), and then I stopped to help someone with a flat. The run was the worst ever. I came in DFL!

I'd still rather have the heat than cold/wet

I am going to try to get to Carlyle in April to do a brick on the course.  We shall see how time commitments work out.

Bring on the Spring time weather.  Warmth and sunshine.Laughing

Hi everyone - this will be my first Olympic distance race. What can any of you veterans tell me about this race --- sounds like it was very hot.

abake - 2011-03-16 9:52 AM Hi everyone - this will be my first Olympic distance race. What can any of you veterans tell me about this race --- sounds like it was very hot.

Last year was my first Oly.  I feel like I learned a lot.

I stayed at the Super 8 and came in Friday night.

I made the mistake of being too active on Saturday ( I ran the 10k course in the middle of the afternoon Saturday, after swimming for half an hour.)

Swim:  wave start last year: men, followed shortly by the women (a fair number of women passed me on the swim).  If you don't open water swim much, definitely spend the time to work on your sighting.

Bike:  fairly flat for first several miles then some rolling  hills.  Last year there was a pretty steady headwind on the way back.  Some volunteers on the route to keep you on track.  (I learned that I should work on drinking more while on the bike.)

Run:  super flat out and back, one climb each way.  no shade, so the run felt really hot.  well supported with water/gatorade about every mile

Last year, the winner was coming in as I was passing through T2.

Going to miss the event this year, weddings always get ya haha.  This was a GREAT event, ran very well!!!  I head kind of snuck up on all of us, but I think they changed start times this year.  Everyone doing this event will be glad they did.

P.S. watch out for the hill at the turn around, it will get ya!!!

I did the Sprint last year and the heat was brutal.  I'll take the heat over 50 degrees and raining like it was Effingham the week before.  I thought the event was extremely well run and will be doing my first Oly at this race.

Had trouble finding a hotel room, found one at Comfort Inn in Salem. Must be graduation weekend down that way? Seems like most of the hotels in Greenville, Centralia, etc. were booked up.

I think I am just going to commute the morning of the race.  I live a little over an hour away.  If my wife & kids want to go, we will probably camp.

Coming from Springfield, we probably could have driven down that morning, but we're somewhat "directionally challenged", so probably better to make sure we know where we are going.

Planning on heading to Carlyle on April 16 for a bike/run brick (weather permiting).  Should get there around 10 a.m. and park in the transition area by the west dam.  Anybody else up for a training session?

I may bring my wetsuit as well.  Undecided

I'm not sure what my time was... not sure why I don't have it posted in my logs. I didn't do a RR either. Maybe my blank RR overrode the logs.

I was definitely last in the 2010 Gateway Oly... the race director rode his bike behind me and told the tables they could close up as I ran back to the finish.

I emailed him for results... not sure I want to see them, lol.

I'm also heavier, but hope to do better!

I have the results (I am very numbers oriented.Tongue out  I started with myself to the end of finish times.):

85      67/72     94 Michael Scherrer            3:25:07
86      68/72    109 Matt Surdyke                3:25:30
87      19/28     58 Laura Klein                 3:26:07
88      69/72     75 Edgar Myers                 3:26:42
89      70/72    113 Mark Varner                 3:29:13
90      20/28     31 Kathleen Flannery           3:33:11
91      21/28     20 Clara Decoster              3:36:22
92      22/28     36 Heidi Gioia                 3:36:48
93      23/28     60 Abbe Kordik                 3:43:57
94      24/28     99 Ali Schweitzer              3:44:21

96      25/28    123 Maura Douglas               3:46:27

There are 4 dnf listed.  We did start and finish, now we have a baseline for this year.    If you want your splits, let me know and I can forward them to you.

I was second to last in my age group, but I did finish.  My main goal this year is to not walk on the run course.

lol... thanks for the results! So sad... my best OLY tim is 2:50. That was 25lbs/3years ago. Really struggling with my weight this last year.

If you don't mind giving me the splits, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Damn! I told everyone I was DFL.  I figured if you came in behind me you still made up for it by starting after me.  Pretty sure I was last out of the water. ( I want a wetsuit) I know the announcer said the leaders were at the turnaround when I hit T1.  Also, I know they were finished when I got back to T2.  I need this weather to break, I'm such a training wuss.  This year I registered clydesdale though it will not matter podium-wise.  Somebody save me a sandwich.

52 days until race day.  How is your training going?

I'm at the end of a run focus week.  Next week is supposed to be bike focus, but I'm taking the bike to the shop for its spring tune up.  I'll probably take some spin classes and sit in the back and follow my own training.

Syaotblh - 2011-03-31 7:35 AM Even though I'm not racing at Gateway I open to coming up for a ride/run.

I am planning on being there about 10 a.m. on April 16.  I would love the company, especially for the bike portion.

No trip to Carlyle this weekend.  Between the weather forecast and gas prices, I think I will train close to home.

How is everybody's training coming along?  Less than 6 weeks until race day!!!

Mine is going well.  I am shooting for a 2:45 after a miserable finish last year.  My swim is stronger, my bike is ok, and my run off the bike is stronger.

I just hope I can get some more bike time outside.  This weather has been brutal.  With the storms/rain, I have been reluctant to ride very far from home.

Training is going pretty well although it's been challenging getting outside to ride. I have no idea what time to shoot for, as this will be my first Olympic distance. Surprised I have lined up some OWS for the next two weekends.  Hope the water is not too cold!

My training is going ok.  I did New Orleans 69.1 a few weeks ago and it's been a little tough getting back in the game mentally.  Anyone up for a swim the afternoon before the race?
