Subject: Hit by a car
Hi all,

Last week on Wed morning I was hit by a car on my commute to work (Abbey to Chilliwack) by Keith Wilson Bridge and Boundary road. A blue civic did a California stop at the stop sign when I was turning left and ploughed into the rear section of my frame and hit the tire. Luckily I am not hurt that bad. I have a slightly bruised lower back, bruised left meniscus, and a bruised elbow. None of my gear was torn and I didn’t hit my head. I am very very lucky and I’m thankful my injuries are not worse.

The driver did stop and was super apologetic, which was nice but didn’t really take away from the fact that I was six days away from a race and lying flat on my back on an asphalt road with a broken bike! Add to it that I was feeling really strong and ready for Monday’s race. The driver gave me a ride to work and I’ve filed an ICBC report and the guy is being held responsible. ICBC basically said they’ll do whatever it takes to get my bike to it’s original state before the accident which was basically a five month old perfect condition 2007 Lemonde Alp de Huez with about 800kms on it.

Long and short of it, I’m glad I’m ok but I really don’t want the bike back. It is still being determined whether or not the frame is ok and the angle of the collision was such that it didn’t crack the frame. Personally I don’t trust the frame anymore. Harv from Life Cycles has suggested that it might be ok and it’s just replacement of parts. Derailer, front right shifter, front and rear tire ect.

Does anyone know what would be safe to still ride on when it comes to this type of thing? When is it ok to trust a aluminum carbon mix frame when it’s been hit like this?

Any help or experience with something like this would be greatly appreciated.

GD

maybe remind your LBS that they are getting a new sale if they deem the frame no good. I'm not saying to defraud ICBC but if the frame is comprimised AT ALL, get it replaced, not repaired. Glad you are not too badly banged up. Hope it works out, don't settle for anything less than you are entitled to.

BTW, you sure it was a 2007 Lemonde Alp de Huez and not a brand new 2008 Cervelo PC4?

Hold on a sec...you're right! It was a 2008 Cervelo PC4? Man what was I thinking...I don't want to defraud anyone that's for sure but I definitely want it in the condition before the accident. Only makes sense to get a replacement. We'll have to wait and see. I think part of the issue here is that I didn't take it to a Lemonde dealer. the frame has scratches on both the left and right side at the back of the frame.

Crazy business.

Still went in the Vancouver tri...man that was amazing. it was really really cool to be in a race with athletes of that caliber. Really impressed me when they flew by me on their bikes. I'll post the race info when I have it. But the guy who finished the swim first in the Olympic length beat my 750m time...crazy!! Oh and 1000 x's better than My first tri...

So here's a question on bikes, what do you think. the Alpe de huez or Specialized Roubiax?? Or Tarmac for that matter. Looks like I'm going to get it replaced which makes me give out a big ol' sigh of relief.
