I'm on the other side of the big hill (big boom when the shuttle lands) ... there used to be a few servicepeople on here, but I'm not sure they still are.

Close enough to see the place?  What do you think of the area?  I might be moving there...

Sorry -- when locals say "big hill," we mean the San Gabriel Mt Range (& Mt Wilson), which is 6000 feet elevation, so nope, can't see Edwards unless I drive up and over, which I have.  It's in the desert, so hothothot, but the surrounding areas had a big boom during the housing craze, which increased shopping, etc., over there.  Unfortunately those areas now are likely going through the mortgage-industry bust.  But, it's relatively close to the rest of LA urban sprawl, and if you like desert it's beautiful.

Not from there, but drive through on the way to the Sierras several times a year.  It's pretty flat and deserty, if that's your thing.   Hot HOT in the summer, cold in the winter.

Pros - 3 hours from Mammoth, some great skiing/boarding, hiking, fishing, climbing, hi altitude training.  Couple hours from Lake Isabella and Kern River rafting area.   Cheap real estate.  Couple hours from L.A. hustle/bustle

Cons- it's way out there.

Yeah, I live in Rapid City, SD right now.

Thanks for the info, everyone.  Sounds like it's what I thought...kinda BFE but easy to drive to lots of places....

My other option is Eglin AFB in Florida...so, still not sure what I'm gonna do!
