Subject: RE: Garmin Accuracy? keenanr - 2009-05-15 8:08 PM I was wondering what others have experienced with the accuracy of their Garmin. I ran the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati two weeks ago and my Garmin showed the race to be almost a mile long, 27.08 to be exact. It started from the very first mile and got progressively worse. I can't imagine the race course being almost a mile long therefore I have to assume the Garmin was inaccurate. Someone told me it had to do with the swinging of your arm that makes it inaccurate but that doesn't make much sense to me. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have the Garmin 205 if it makes any difference. Most marathons I've run have garmine'd out to about +1 mile. Chances are very good that 1 ) the course was right on the money, and 2 ) you did run 27 miles. The RD will measure a course and chalk a line in the road, showing the measured course, presumably close to the shortest distance point-to-point. That's 26.2. But we all know how marathons go...for the first 4 or 5 miles, you're weaving in-and-out of traffic, accumulating sideways mileage in addition to course-measured mileage. If you don't run the shortest distance around corners and turns, more mileage. Ducking into porta-potties, veering to grab water at the aid station, dodging cups and gatorade in the street - more mileage. It adds up. |
