Age Group Rank = 23/52
Pre-race routine:

I am not a big pre race eater. In fact I can barely stomache a full Power Bar. This morning I avoided all food. I was on the road by 5:00 AM. It was about an hour drive, dark, full moon, and very relaxing. I enjoy a little bit of a drive to the race location. This gives time to reflect on race strategy and goals, and also calms the nerves appropriatly.
Event warmup:

1/2 mile walk from parking location to Transition.
Swim
  • 15m 18s
  • 600 meters
  • 02m 33s / 100 meters
Comments:

Ahhh.. the swim. The biggest challenge for me. I am intrigued because this, more than any other event requires the best strategy. The water was a flat calm, and thoroughly disgusting. I did a warm up out to a large bouy and the second I put my face in the water, I could litterally taste the murkiness of the lake. Prior to the start, I seeded myself toward the back of the group. Being a 15 min 600 meter swimmer, I thought this was appropriate. I was wrong. The ENTIRE swim I found myself dodging and avoiding slower swimmers in my age group and the age group ahead. It was a traffic jam out there.
What would you do differently?:

The race sent out the waves every two min instead of three. I found this to be a problem because of the traffic it created out there. Next time, I will seed myself in the front half.. closer to the middle. I also simply need to improve my swimming and get faster.
Transition 1
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

This went well. I did the no socks thing and there was no problem. I recommend it at this distance, but would test it first. My feet did not blister at all, but others did.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 40m 13s
  • 13.7 miles
  • 20.44 mile/hr
Comments:

I was happy with this overall. My bike (Felt S25) is very comfortable for me and I am very satisfied with it. As a fairly new biker, I was satisfied with my time.
What would you do differently?:

Get better on the bike overall. Get faster.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 timing was missed for all athletes in this race. That's a shame because I really screwed this one up. Went down the wrong row to my transition area. The rows were long with no breaks. I had to run under a pole and got my bike stuck. Had to back out, then do it again. Pure disaster. Once at my spot, I was ok, but slow in tying my shoes. I need to look into fast lace techniques.
What would you do differently?:

All of it. I need to think T2 out more during prerace and set up mental markers to remember where my transition is.
Run
  • 25m 56s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 11s  min/km
Comments:

I ran well. Because T2 times were included in this portion, I am pretty confident I ran a low 24:xx 5k. My T2 was at LEAST a 1:30. Probably closer to 2:00+ I was happy with my run. No stopping, steady pace. Was trying to catch the rabbit, but no luck there.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Catch the rabbit maybe.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank water, stood around and cheered the rest of my group of friends in. Met a few BT'ers. Very nice people.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

By midnight after the run, I came down with the beginning of a cold. Not sure if this had any effect on my race. I felt ok at race time.

Event comments:

Tri the parks is a great series here in Ga. I highly recommend the series to anyone who can do one, some, or even all of the races. I'd like to see some better breakdown of times, such as bike pace, and event place # within age group.

Awesome race, Ron! Great times....sorry about the T2. Definitely need to set up those mental (or maybe even some physical) markers.

I've always heard that once a dog catches the rabbit, he never wants to race again. Perhaps something to keep in mind.

Nice race and time.  Congratulations.

I was there too, and a lot slower than you.  The water was nasty.  They have to do something about the start and exit areas.  My towel was literally brown after the race.

It's great to have a series like this in GA, with a season of races so close to Atlanta.

Ron: You ran a great race. I was very impressed with both your bike and run times. Guess I'll be gunning for you at Tugaloo! We can team up and chase The Steamer.

Steamy's right about that rabbit and dog thing!

Alright Joe, I apologize (steamer made me do it!)

Seriously Joe - think Peachtree and then multiply that by 10.

She's crazy.
