It might happen once more in my lifetime (my maternal granny lived to be 98).

Chief Justice John Roberts.

Golf applause.

Sidenote: Why doesn't he show his teeth when he smiles during the most important moment in his career?

I think his teeth are capped with gemstones.  A "Cadillac Grill" as they say in the hood.  He doesn't want people to get the wrong idea...

It is a bit unsettling, but between the 2 I'd rather face oipolloi than Lara... Of course, my picture may produce an equally unsettling reaction.

Does oipolloi's avatar not freak anyone else out?

Renee, sorry about the potential hijack, but Oipolloi, just what the hell is that thing?

By the way, regarding John Roberts confirmation, agreed - it is a rather momentous occasion.  Though what may come next could be a firestorm, what kind of Supreme Court Justice should POTUS nominate next?  Do you think that he'll see this as his chance to leave his mark on how the Constitution will be interpreted for years (decades?) to come and nominate an idealogue from the right, or will he play nice and nominate someone similar in thought to Justice O'Connor?

Just curious -

Steve

When I first saw it and asked me about and didn't get a repsonse, I had to PM him.  I agree- I think it's freaky, andalmost reminds me of slug- never seen anything like it!  Anyways, he told me google it- lol!  Still haven't done my research yet, but when I do I'll post everything I learned.  Hyjack over...

W certainly wanted his Supreme Court nominees to have a long tenure and was putting his brain to work on it.  One of the potential candidates for replacing Sandra O'Connor (not Roberts) commented after his interview with GW, that all W asked him about was his running.  Hmmm.

Somehow he reminded me of Spy Daddy from Alias. You know, Victor Garbor's character. May be a younger Spy Daddy.

Do ya'll (or yous guys as we say in Philly) consider Justice Roberts an idealogue? Perhaps POTUS will nominate someone in his mold.

If you do think he is an idealogue, how does his thinking differ from Justice O'Connor?

No, no, I didn't mean to imply that I think he's an idealogue - my question was do you think that's who Bush will nominate next?  Will POTUS see the next vacancy as an opportunity to wrench the court to the right?

Frankly, from all outward appearances, Chief Justice John Roberts is an incredibly intelligent man.  Though his aversion to answering some questions during his confirmation hearing worried me somewhat, his answers were always of the "I'd rather not answer that question specifically as it would automatically bias me".  A pretty smart freakin' cookie if you ask me.

POTUS has claimed in the past that he's "a uniter, not a divider".  If he really wants to live up to that claim, he'll nominate a moderate, a swing vote, someone who thinks much like Justice O'Connor.

Besides, Chief Justice Roberts' favorite movies are "Dr. Zhivago" and "North by Northwest" - two of my favorite movies, too.  He can't be all that bad.  I just wish he would've named "Blazing Saddles", too...

As a lawyer, clerk and inhouse counsel, John Roberts worked for conservatives and strongly advocated that point of view.  Do you think he was just fooling?  Could he be a closet liberal?  C'mon.  He is a Rehnquist clone and an ideologue.

Don't get me wrong, I know he's no closet liberal and I am worried about the kinds of decisions he may hand down, but I still think POTUS could have nominated someone much worse.  I just hope that his much worse nomiation isn't the next one.

By the way, is Big Ed's pizza still around in Oak Ridge?  I have a friend who grew up there and took me home for Thanksgiving one year.  He and I went to Big Ed's for pizza one night.  Good stuff.

I can see how you might label Justices Thomas and Scalia ideologues for the right.

I can also see how you might label Justices Ginsberg and Breyer as ideologues for the left.

Is that what we want on SCOTUS? Ideologues on either the right or the left?

Seems like Justice Roberts may actually take the law as his primary concern, rather than trying to shape public policy for political reasons.

You may disagree with his conclusions because they are at odds with your own politics, but that hardly makes him an ideologue.

Let's talk about it in a few years.  So far, Chief Justice Roberts has not written an opinion as Chief Justice or even answered any significant questions on his legal perspectives.

When he does write an opinion, he will have to give his logic and basis for the decision.  Then we will know how he really thinks.  Moreover, he's a fairly smart guy (not in Renee's league but fairly smart).  His opinions will be read and interpreted by others.  He'll get more intense scrutiny on his work than he has ever received.  It may change him from a conservative advocate to a jurist.  I hope so.  But, my prediction, based on precious little in the confirmation hearings, is that he's an conservative idealogue just like Thomas, Scalia and Rehnquist.  That is bad for the country.

OK, I don't get it.  The "existential literature" section of my brain must be taking a break.

Please explain.
