Subject: Nutrition Calculator

While I was trying to finalize my nutrition plan for SC HIM I came across Tri Talks nutrition calculator.

http://tri-talk.com/TriTalkNC/TriTalkNC.htm

It helped me bring it all together so I thought I would share it.  btw, thanks to the captain for pointing me in this direction.

Tri talk is a great podcast. There has been several good episodes on nutrition. On the website they actually have a topic index so you can go right to the one you want

This seems like a good resource but now I have a couple questions.  the calculator suggests that I consume, roughly, 400 calories per hour.

I suspect that SCHIM will take me almost 7 hours, so 400 cal/hour is about 2800 calories.  My current nutrition plan, that I've practiced on the bike, has me at 2660 by the end of the race.

My questions are related to timing.  I should be dividing those calories up differently between the bike and run, correct?  And, does this total include pre-race calories?

My nutrition plan:  Pre-Race = 770 cal; Bike = 1350 cal; Run = 540 cal for a total of 2660 calories.  By the way, those pre-race calories are consumed gradually over about 3 hours prior to the start.

Input would help as I only have two more good opportunities to practice my nutrition.  This weekend I'm doing a long brick and later in the month I'm hoping to do a century ride.

I assumed my breakfast didn't count towards my race nutrition, but anything I consumed right before the race would.  For example,  I plan on taking in two gels and sports drink right before the start.  Those 250 cal are part of my plan.  I used the calculator to double check that my plan was in the ballpark of what was needed.  Everyone is different.

If you try to down 400 per hour, you better try it before the race.  Also, getting 540 cal while running is a real challenge.   I found you have to / must try different levels.  It is a very frustrating topic because it is very different for each person.  Last year, I used an OLY to dial in mine before my first HIM.  During workouts, I figured out that bananas make me yak  on runs over 10 miles.  Go figure.

Tri talk information will put you in the ball park, then play with it.  Also, try different types of carbs.  If you listen to the tri talk pod cast, it is critical to get different types of carbs.  Check out the labels and try to mix it up some and not just get simple sugars, etc.

Sweet calculator, thanks Doug. The calories burned estimates seemed to be a little low, for me at least. Once I adjusted for what I have calculated as calories burned in each of the disiplines, at came out spot on. Awesome! Also, as mentioned by severals, getting the cals on the run is a challenge, especially when it's hot, so train your body to get them in on the bike and EAT, DRINK, EAT like it's an all you can each buffet on the bike!

Best of luck to all!!

Yikes! If you try to down that many calories you are just asking for GI shut down. For the bike ~350 cal/hr (and that is on the high side) for the run you are going to be lucky if you get more than ~150 cal/hr down. Remember it is impossible to replace calories at a 1:1 ratio...it just can't be done. That is why we train at low intesities to train our bodies to burn from our fat stores.

Good luck.

That is a really good point. I read an excellent e-book from Hammer Nutrition found at

http://www.hammernutrition.com/downloads/fuelinghandbook.pdf

It was obviously biased towards there product, but I have been basing my nutrition on their recommendations (using other products) and it seems to be working so far

They claim the ideal replenishment rates are about

Water 20-33% (20-25 oz per hour)
Sodium 20-35% (300-600 mg per hour)
Calories 30-40% (240-280 caolories)

Obviously YMMV. They say sodium/electrolyte needs vary greatly from person to person. They give some info on how your needs may vary based on weather and race conditions as well
