I see everyone doing the dolphin kick, wasn't that kick illegal in the last olympics?

Only in breast stroke. Kitajima was widely criticized for (illegally) dolphin kicking last time with out being DQed. The judges said they had a hard time seeing it (which is crap) so FINA changed the rule to allow one dolphin kick per turn to quell the controversy.

In other strokes it's been legal for a long time.

I know at one point they limited the dolphin kick to 15 meters per turn before you could go the entire length.  If you look at the lane markers there is a small ride ring at that point.

I have a new dolphin kick question since the first one has been answered - is it illegal to do the freestyle kick? Or is the dolphin more efficient? I've tried the dolphin kick after pushing off the wall and I feel silly doing it, plus I don't seem to gain any speed in my splits [and I keep detailed splits]. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong...

I think it is illegal for the breast stroke but it is legal for the other strokes but in generally I believe the dolphin kick is faster when done correctly.

Flutter kick is only legal in freetyle and backstroke events.

Dolphin kick is faster, but only if you streamline very well, have an exceptionally strong core and flexible ankles and lower back.

It is legal to do the freestyle kick in backstroke or freestyle. It is illegal in butterfly or breastroke.

For most swimmers, the butterfly kick, if done correctly, will generate more speed but will also take a little more out of you, which is why you see it done more in sprints and less in distance events.

Most beginner and intermediate swimmers will be slower using butterfly kick off the wall as it usually takes a long time to become good at it. For the triathlons I have done (pool & lake swims only), I would not use it.
