I have a new dolphin kick question since the first one has been answered - is it illegal to do the freestyle kick? Or is the dolphin more efficient? I've tried the dolphin kick after pushing off the wall and I feel silly doing it, plus I don't seem to gain any speed in my splits [and I keep detailed splits]. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong...
It is legal to do the freestyle kick in backstroke or freestyle. It is illegal in butterfly or breastroke.
For most swimmers, the butterfly kick, if done correctly, will generate more speed but will also take a little more out of you, which is why you see it done more in sprints and less in distance events.
Most beginner and intermediate swimmers will be slower using butterfly kick off the wall as it usually takes a long time to become good at it. For the triathlons I have done (pool & lake swims only ), I would not use it. Edited by docswim24 2008-08-14 10:51 AM
