Subject: Chinese swimmers

Pulled this out of the Georgia forum...

Inevtiably, the performances of the Chinese swimmers are going to be suspect, based on their doping history and the level of performance of their "unknown" swimmers at the games. But I did some research of the girls who swept the 200 fly, and it turns out they aren't that unknown on th einternational scene, adn their performances don't seem to be that unusual.

Here's a pull from that thread, and the link so that I don't have to rehash:

Rocket Man - 2008-08-15 10:45 AM Fishy, fishy, fishy I tell you.....these Chineese swimmers are pulling out some amazing swims.

run4yrlif - 2008-08-15 11:06 AM But so is everybody, really.

Here's a comparison of time progression and world rankings for the last 3 years of the Chinese 200 butterfliers and Rebecca Soni, who won the 200 breast for the US last night:

Rebecca Soni (USA):

  • 2008: 2:20.00 (1)
  • 2007: 2:23.36 (2)
  • 2006: 2:31.54 (57)

Liu Zige (CHN):

  • 2008: 2:04:18 (1)
  • 2007: 2:09:45 (23)
  • 2006: 2:12:13 (44)

Jiao Liuyang (CHN):

  • 2008: 2:04.72 (2)
  • 2007: 2:07.06 (5)
  • 2006: 2:08.54 (8)

So, in 3 years, Soni dropped 11.54 seconds while the Chinese dropped 7.95 and 3.82 seconds, respectivley. Those are only a couple of examples, but if you're gonna suspect the Chinese of doping, you probably need to be equally suspicious of others as well.

As a side note, the US leads Chinese in positive drug tests from their Olympic team 1 to nothing.

I blame Bush.

Or that socialist, Obama. Either or.

Seriously...just trying to provide some data and perspective.

"As a side note, the US leads Chinese in positive drug tests from their Olympic team 1 to nothing."

actually...................Two Chinese swimmers and a Race Walker have recieved bans in the last and have had 8 total violations this year.

MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) -- Chinese race walker Song Hongjuan was suspended for four years Friday after failing a drug test, the latest Chinese athlete sanctioned for doping before next month's Beijing Olympics.

The International Association of Athletics Federations said Song tested positive for the blood-boosting hormone EPO in a surprise, out-of-competiton test in Beijing on Feb. 24.

All her results from that date have been annulled, and she is banned until March 25, 2012.

Song finished 14th in the women's 20-kilometer event at the 2004 Athens Olympics and 15th in the same race at last year's world championships.

"The IAAF is committed to protecting the sport of athletics from the threat of doping," the IAAF said.

In the past two weeks, two Chinese athletes and their coaches received lifetime bans for doping -- swimmer Ouyang Kunpeng and freestyle wrestler Luo Meng.

Altogether, China has logged eight cases of drug violations since January, according to Titan Sports, China's most well-known sports newspaper.
