Subject: RE: Elite Cyclists Risk Infertility?Hrm I certainly don't have enough miles in then I have 5 kids. I guess I really need to start putting in more bike miles fast in case the wife gets an ideas. Seriously though, the one thing you really need to take into consideration with any "study" is what is the base rate data. If the baserate data for low sperm count or whatever the infertility reason stated is say 1 in 5,000 in the normal population. You then study long distance cyclists and find 1 in 5,000 have low sperm count or whatever... um that is just the baseline. One would also need to look at their data collection. For example if I poll folks at a funeral as to how many have recently experienced the death of a loved one, the numbers should be pretty high. If I go to the emergency room and poll folks for who has been injured recently, ya again high numbers expected. If I go to a fertility clinic and ask how many folks ride their bike, well I would be scewing the data by where I collected it. There are a lot of junk "studies" out there from folks who don't understand how to study well anything or anything well. Anyway kids cost more than bikes even really good bikes, so um well have more bikes 8 ). |
