Subject: San Diego Cycling WTF?
So I am with the family in San Diego... at around 8:54 on Friday night (Around Ash and Second)... a large group of cyclists blow by... at first, they were all geared up with helmets and lights, but after this initial group, it looked like a large group of drunk college kids -- no helmets, no lights, taunting the cars, and they ran through exactly 5 cycles of red lights while I waited.

Anyone know who these people were and why they want to give cyclists such a bad name?

Next question?   They weren't cyclists.

But, then again, I've seen groups of roadies riding without helmets, blowing thru stoplights and flipping off cars... so there goes my theory....

It was a large group.
Continuous riders for 5 light cycles, a couple of hundred folks, about 2/3 looked like real riders with about 1/3 out-and-out clowns.

It looked like at least a semi-organized ride, but there was no self-policing of the clowns.

We can assert our right to the road without being rude about it. Focus on the ride, not on the cars that also happen to be on the road."


Tie up traffic - check.
Confrontational with motorists - check.
Rude - Check.
Made people bitter towards cyclists - check.

Either it was not this group event, or they really contradicted themselves!

Yup, sounds like critical mass.  I got stuck in it about a year ago (in SD).  There were so many cyclists, I spent about 15 minutes stuck at the top of an offramp waiting for them to clear out.  During that whole time, the road was thick with cyclists going by, there must have been hundreds if not thousands of them.

Ahhhh, OK. I thought maybe just a few yahoos, but yeah, CM gives cyclists a very bad rep to the general population, 5 lights? I woulda been pissed too
