1. First sprint of the season coming up in 2 weeks.  Running shoes are getting on towards the end of their careers.  They're comfortable but I'm starting to get that feeling where you notice they're not supporting you quite as well as they used to.  I have a new pair of the same shoes waiting to replace the old ones, but I can't remember how long it usually takes me to break them in...
  - With 2 weeks to go, do you switch to the new pair, or stick it out with the old ones?

2.  Running caps - any science behind wearing or not wearing a hat in hot weather?  Wildly unscientific opinions also welcome

Thanks a lot guys.  I will google this stuff as well, but just wondering if any BTers have any advice either way.  Thanks!

Start wearing the new shoes now. You have plenty of time to break them in.

I always wear a hat, but I'm old and balding-so i don't know if it's science or vanity. I feel cooler if the sun isn't beating down on my head.

New shoes don't take long to break in these days.  I'd start wearing them now and wear them for the race.

As for a hat, I always have one at my transition and make a judgement call when I start out on the run whether to put it on or not.

Put the new shoes on now and don't look back. If over the next 2 weeks, they are uncomfortable, causing blisters or pains, switch back to your old shoes for race day. It's probably 5k, right, so worse case scenerio, you run in the old shoes for the race.

As for a hat, just wear your bike helmet, saves time in T2. just kidding, don't do that. I have always been a no hat kinda person, so I go sunglasses, no hat, but if the heat is tough, try going for a training run with a hat on and see if it bothers you. If not, wear it on race day. Just make sure you train with it first.

Shoes, yes.

I always wear a hat, as it keeps sweat from dripping down into my eyes.

1) New shoes.  Modern shoes do not require any "break in period" and other than making sure they are not rubbing in the wrong places you can go out and have at it with them.

2) Personal choices.  But I almost always use a hat or visor.  Just a habit now and it does shade the eyes a little.

X2, and to elaborate on the "other than": in particular, if you're going to a different brand/model, give enough time for your feet to "break into" the shoes.
