Pre-race routine:

This was an odd morning. Not too much prep last night and almost forgot my water bottles. Grabbed it all and sped out late! Not like me but we had the babies with us.

I managed some alone time before the race to dedicate it in my head and heart to my dear friend Serenity, my sister of the heart, who passed last Thanksgiving. I have had a really hard time with her death and feel lost without her guidence in my life. I miss her terribly and managed to let some of my anger that I felt at her passing go in the water today.
Event warmup:

I dipped my toes in the water, found it warm enough then went back to quietly panicking.

Interesting note. They did not mention 9/11 and so after the first wave of Oly's went I asked about it and the NA. He said he didn't have anyone to sing it so I offered. My voice chook for the first part, race nerves, not singing nerves, but then I got into it and thought about the people in 9/11.

What would you do differently?:

More OW time. Not have pneumonia. That really shot me on the swim.
Transition 1

Comments:

I am fast in T1 now. No monkey business, get my crap on and ride.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike

  • 24.85 miles
  • 0.00 mile/hr
Comments:

I hammered the bike. I can say that. Not just for me either, but I hammered. I made up HUGE amounts of lost ground in the swim and, given my overall time, I must have been flying. I was very proud of myself and thankful to Jean Rennick for my bike time! Not to mention The Bear.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I need more Watts on the pedals but that will only get better with time.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

My feet were numb.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 00m
  • 6.21 miles

Comments:

Dehydrated does not begin to describe it but I did not care. I was wheezing from the pneumonia the whole way. I could not run. My legs coulf but my lungs said "no". When I did run I was faster than normal but my walk was a crawl. I just could not breath.
What would you do differently?:

Not have pneumonia. I forgot my inhaler. I only have it for the illness. That was dumb, dumb, dumb!
Post race
Warm down:

Just hung out with Gene, thanked Jean and watched my two year old play with my medal and see if gravity worked on my medal.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pneumonia, no doubt about it. I am not unhappy, I am thrilled with my time. I can forsee breaking an hour and 30 next year. I just wish I had been 100% physically as well as mentally.

I lost 4 pounds today. I was NOT hydrated enough. Although the temporary loss looked good on the scale (I know it will be back tomorrow).

Event comments:

There were NOT enough people to assist in the swim and two of the "lifeguards" were on surfboards hanging out TOGETHER! there was a whole 100 meter stretch of the swim with NO assistance and then you had two within 10 feet of one another. I was not pleased with that. I have seen them do this before and if they don't get those guards working as a better team someone is going to die in one of their races. I am not the only one who feels this way. The President of the local tri club said the same thing to me a few weeks ago. It is their main failing (that and nothing EVER starts on time). I am concerned enough to write them about it but I need a couple days to think about how to put it so it is not nasty. I just want safety to be a high priority. They did come down hard on MP3 player wearers. I was thrilled about that.

If you did that awesome with pneumonia, just think what you could do if you were 100% !!!  I am very impressed at your drive, enthusiasm and performance!  I'll say it again - YOU ROCK!!!

Yeah, rock on! I heard your NA as I was waiting for the dual to start. I thought it was somewhat weird to have that song after the start of the event. You sing very well.

And with pneumonia, you should be home!

I was there... that was you who sang NA!! It was great!! I thought it was odd too that nothing was mentiooned. You have some guts!! And you did race with pneumonia!? Wow.

Regarding a lack of assistance in the water - a friend of mine who did Oly (and not that great swimmer) said the same thing. He said his both legs weren't doing well toward the end, but luckily he was able to stand up by then.

Congratulations on your strong performance!

Outstanding job singing the NA. I was in the car park when you sang and it sounded great.
