Subject: Olympic to 70.3 Time???
So I'm planning on competing in the St. George 70.3 next May. I'm planning on following a training program but I'm worried about the cut off times. I just completed an Olympic distance in 2:43. My times were 21 minutes for the swim, 1:21 for the bike, and 52 minutes for the run. The Olympic course was current aided and the bike and run were flat. I know St George is really hilly and not current aided. Do you think I can finish St George within the cut off times? Im not worried about the run because I ran D1 in college and now run marathons and it's easily my strength (I ran with a friend during the Oly). The bike is definitely my weakest event but I'm taking spin classes. Do you think competing St George is plausible and any predictions for time?

My opinion is ...........you need to stop worrying about your time for your first 70.3.........and have fun with it.

I'm not worried about my time. I just don't want to get a DNF and want to want to make sure that it's reasonable for me to complete.

I think you're sandbagging like no other if you're an ex-D1 runner who can swim a 21 Oly and think you might DNF a HIM. You should be shooting for the AG win at the minimum with that type of ability.

YES!  Best Oly I've had was 3 something (long bike).  Did an Oly 7 weeks before my 1st HIM and was having a great race and crashed on the bike and lost ~2 weeks with injury, then had lung infection 2 weeks before the race, my time was 6 hrs.  You'll be fine, "Each athlete will have 8 hours and 30 minutes to complete the race"

Start riding in earnest!  If you don't have one get a trainer and start riding using virtual power (if you don't have a power meter).

No worries--my Oly times were similar (2:41? 2:43?) when I trained for my first HIM (of course not a 21 minute 1500m--faster run and slower swim, similar bike), and my first HIM was a hilly course (Chelanman). I did 5:53. You'll be fine! Next May is more than enough time. I think most HIM programs are 16-20 weeks.

not nearly enough information for time predictions, but if you're a d1 runner still running marathons and already swimming a 21 minute 1500, all you need is a solid plan and you'll probably be in contension for top 10 or better. hills & altitude willbe your biggest challenges. Spin class alone will help but there are better more targeted ways to ride as well.

good lcuk

I would make sure that you hydrate sufficiently during the race. You can get away with things in an Oly that you can't in a 70.3.
