Anyone else have an opinion on this?  I think it looks like the rider turned the wheel at the last second, or let it be turned as it hit the dog and basically knew his only option was to go a$$ over tea kettle so he did it as safely as he could.  At least that way he could get up to ride again.  Maybe I'm giving him too much credit, but that's what it looked like to me.

Hard to say what else a person should have done.  In those situations you never know if the animal is going to bolt one way or another at the last second.

Reminds me of that Colorado spring football game when the kid got blasted by the players coming through the end zone: My first thought is always `WTF is a dog/kid doing on the course/field' followed by `Where's the owner/parent' followed by `Awww poor puppy/kid' followed by `Oooh those people are gonna be in SO much trouble.'

The poor dog's expression was enough to make you feel bad for him/her.

Kudos to the cyclist for at least ATTEMPTING to avoid the dog.
