Subject: Training Question - Sprint v. Oly

Hi, all,

I am training for the Finger Lakes Olympic on Sept. 21.  I'm using the 20 week bike focused plan (3 bikes, 2 swims, 2 runs/week).  My problem is that I have 2 sprints coming up during August and am not sure what to do about volume the weeks of the sprints??  If I back off on volume those weeks, will I suffer during the oly?  Right now I can do all of the oly distances separately with relative ease.

Thanks for any help!!

I don't have an answer to your question, but as a fellow Covert, originally from upstate New York, when I saw your username I just had to reply to say "Hi."

Good luck with the Oly!

The week before the sprint(s), treat as a taper. Maybe use the OLY taper week.

If they happen to fall on a rest of of the plan, train right through 'em.  If not, can you rearrange things so you have the day off the day before your sprints?

If the Olympic is your key race, than I wouldn't overdo the taper for the sprints. Maybe fairly light a couple days out, rest the day before, then do the race. If you do anything the day after the race, might have to go more at a distance or recovery pace. Then right back on the horse...

x2

If the Oly is your A race then no real taper for the sprints other a couple of easy days before hand. I wouldn't take a day off personally but a short ride or run the day before to stay loose.

Frequently people over taper for the shorter distances. But, be sure you recover adequately after the Sprints. You can build them into your training week so that they are treated as your hard workout. Also you may consider skipping any really long rides to avoid feeling too burnt out unless you have your recoverey nailed.

My 2 cents

I would say that provided you are training comfortably above the sprint distances (I would expect that you are by this point in the plan) then train through the sprints.  What I would suggest is following the plan until two days before, then taking that day off, followed by a day that has a short swim, bike and run and then race day.

The day after, you will have to assess your recover and I would probably not run (you may have to juggle the schedule a bit) but otherwise follow the plan if you are feeling okay.

Good luck,

Shane

It depends on your goals for the sprints.  Personally, I did a sprint in the middle of Oly training, but it was mostly a training race.  I took off the day before, but that's about all I did.

If your olympic is the real goal for the season, don't take off too much time for the sprints.

You may not need to taper before the Sprint; I have not tapered in a season before a Sprint when focusing on an Olympic as a follow up. I did find that I needed to spend several days doing recovery sessions after the Sprint before I could reliably focus my training on Olympic distances.
