Subject: Supportive Undergarments for women
Hi everyone. This is a question just for the girls I think!  I am brand new (first post!). I am short and about 235 pounds, so a pretty big girl. I'm working on that!  I'm training for a sprint triathlon (Philadelphia Women's Triathlon) in July.  I have a million questions but I'll start with the most pressing one. I am running for the first time ever in my life. So far for a minute at a time at the most, but it is a start!!  I have found a good supportive bra so that I'm not knocked unconscious by my bouncing breasts. But I could use a similar garment for the lower body. I need something to hold in my lower stomach so it doesn't bounce so much. Something squeezy.  I'm guessing I'll need a few of these so can someone recommend something that won't break the budget? I found something at JCPenney that is meant to wear when you are dressed up just to hold in your stomach to make you look skinnier, and it is working okay (hard as heck to squeeze into, but worth it) but I thought you all might have some great suggestions of websites or places to look.  I will ask my other questions in separate posts later. Thanks so much for being here for a newbie. I can't believe I just posted this embarrassing question. But the idea is to LOSE some of this fat and I can't do that without stepping up my training!

I generally run in 1 of three outfit bottoms:

1) bike/tri shorts - spandex is nice and squeezy...
2) running tights, spandexy is sexy, oh yes it is...
3) long underwear under basketball/long athletic shorts - long underwear squeezes, long shorts hide, great for those bloaty days...

I think what you are looking for are compression shorts/tights. They hold "bouncy" parts in quite nicely. I have a bouncy tummy, too...so I certainly can relate.

There are a lot of sports bra threads on BT...but I think your question is very good for the Athenas.  I generally run with a sports bra PLUS the Women's RRS Intensity Tank Bra Top (from Road Runner Sports, on sale right now).... http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/RRL984/Womens_RRS_Intensity_Tank_Sports_Bra_Top

I'm 5'9 and an FF cup and the tank comes all the way to my hips and stays there really well and provides support for the whole torso.  Plus it is wearable as a tank top if need be.  It does provide a lot of extra support for those of us who require two bras just to run.  (Sigh)  If I don'w wear the Intensity Tank, I usually put on a tri top over my sport bra, but they do tend to ride up more for some reason.

Darn it!  www.steepandcheap.com had CW-X Versa tights up this morning for $20.  If they've come up once they'll likely come up again so I'd load that notifier on and keep an eye out.  They focus on the abs/lower back, perfect for what you're looking for.

Hi! I've so been there on the what to wear question. I found that Zoot has some "Ultra Run shorts" that, instead of just a panty liner, have a spandex "under armour" type of liner with loose shorts over top. I got mine on close out and they aren't available on that site, but I found them on sale at All3Sports. here's the link: http://www.all3sports.com/product_info.php?pName=zoot-ultra-run-sho...

I like Zoot because its women's clothing line actually fits larger women. A lot of multi sport clothing manufacturers think people with a diameter bigger than that of a toothpick don't want to do triathlons.

So check it out. These are pricier than typical running shorts but not much more than most try shorts and you have the advantage of a looser short on the outside.

Good luck!

Hi Oceandirt.

First off WELCOME. This site is a font of information. Congrats on your first Tri.  Mine was last summer. I am signed up for 3 so far this year (2 are sprints) and a Muddy Buddy. Once you're hooked you're hooked.

Im 5'7" 211 and have lost about 75 lbs in the last year so I now have alot of jiggly skin. I did my first Tri at 230lbs. I know what you mean about support. I use running tights or Under Armour shorts. I have been known to wear a support brief (yep the kind that sucks in the tummy for under regular clothes) under the running tights. In the beggining I wore mens Under Armour compression shorts under sweat pants so the jiggle was less obvious.

For me it became a trial and error thing. I went to Dicks Sports and tried on every kind of underwear/compression thing they had, even the stuff for guys.  I took home alot of things and tried them out (with regular underwear on) on the treadmill. I took back most of it.

You have to find what is comfortable and 'right' for you. Once you have something that works you will know what to look for and can more easily buy something off the web without trying it on.

What I have now are: Nike running tights(goes to the ankle)regular and winter, Under Armour bike shorts (no padding), Danskin Tri shorts (long legged) and some high waisted support briefs from Sears.

No question is silly or wrong here. If you are facing something for the first time there is someone here that has experienced it before.  It is the wisdom of the ages. Use it.

Same goes for your experiences. Don't forget to post what works for you so someone else can benefit from your knowledge.

Best of luck in July.

Amanda

I have a pair of Moving Comfort spandexy shorts and they are VERY comfortable as well as supportive.

Danskin stuff is also very nice, but not as supportive. Also, if you can fit it (I just recently lost enough weight so it wasn't a bad joke) Nike has very nice stuff in a range of styles in XXL.

You might also check out Junonia (online or catalog) they are more pricey than places like Target but their stuff is very well made and true to description.
